Are you going abroad? Check whether the National Health Fund will cover the costs of possible treatment. There are 2 possibilities

Nowadays, we have the opportunity to plan treatments abroad. We are more and more willing to use it, especially when treatment in Poland is delayed due to exorbitantly long queues. The question arises: does the National Health Fund cover the costs of treatment abroad? Certain conditions must be met.

Treatment outside Poland is becoming more and more popular. Thanks to open borders, we can undergo various treatments, e.g. in Germany or the Netherlands, for which the National Health Fund will pay. According to the National Health Fund, last year it issued 126 consents for foreign treatment, of which the most expensive amounted to as much as PLN 740,000. zloty. When can we apply for such a benefit?

Does the National Health Fund cover the costs of treatment abroad? Certain conditions must be met

Two of them entitle us to apply for consent to foreign treatment, which may also take place in countries outside the European Union. In the first case, the service is available in Poland, but our health does not allow us to wait in a long queue. The second one talks about a completely different situation, which was reported on the National Health Fund website:

(…) It is also possible to obtain consent for planned treatment in a situation where the service is guaranteed but it is not possible to provide it in our country.

If we qualify to submit an application, we should go to the provincial branch of the National Health Fund in our place of residence. You should bring documentation with you, including the diagnosis and the treatment plan proposed by the doctor. It happens that the validity of our application will have to be examined by a national consultant, so it is worth being on the phone to dispel any doubts. After obtaining the necessary information, the National Health Fund makes a decision, which usually takes several weeks.

What does the EHIC card entitle you to abroad? You should have it with you “just in case”

When we plan to travel abroad, practically all our attention is focused on accommodation, attractions and interesting places worth visiting. We rarely consider situations in which we would be forced to seek medical help. Accidents happen to people, so we shouldn’t go anywhere without a valid EHIC card. It entitles us to receive reimbursed treatment, e.g. during an acute allergy attack or appendicitis. Treatment is provided under the same conditions as for citizens of a given country, which means that the patient may be obliged to cover part of the costs. You can obtain the European Health Insurance Card online via ePUAP or at a branch of the National Health Fund. If you feel like it, vote in our poll below.
