The San Telmo Museum presents the exhibition A conversation: Chillida and the arts. 1950-1970, which can be visited between June 8 and September 29, the year that marks the centenary of the birth of the San Sebastian artist. Curator María Bolaños has chosen more than one hundred works from thirty different collections for the exhibition at the San Sebastian museum.
The exhibition aims to broaden the understanding of Chillida, and contemplates the connections between his work and the painting, thought, music, design, architecture, film and photography of his contemporaries.
The focus of the exhibition is the first decades of Chillida’s work, which he relates, among others, to Picasso, Miró, Arp, Julio González, Richier, Lobo, Giacometti, Motherwell, Millares, Dubuffet, Moore, Hepworth, Meadows, Smith, Jacobsen, Caro, Beuys, Chamberlain, Mendiburu, Hantaï, Asins, Aurelia Muñoz, Ozu, Bresson, Cartier-Bresson, Bing, Callahan, Martha Graham and Cunningham.
Between 1950 and 1970, the period covered by the exhibition, Europe reassembled the fabric of modernity after the tragedy of the world war. It was, furthermore, “a strong moment in the history of sculpture, which overcame an almost centenary lethargy and was reborn as a new and radical art; and they were, finally, founding years for Chillida in which he built his personal vision of art “, they explain from the museum.
