Before using a given cosmetic, it is always worth checking its expiry date. Don’t let their appearance or smell fool you. One of the women learned this the hard way.

All cosmetic products expire. The dates on the packaging indicate the period during which the product is safe to use. Using cosmetics after the expiration date may lead to severe consequences, such as skin irritation, infections and other undesirable effects.

Learning from our own or other people’s mistakes can be a valuable lesson for us. This is the case of user @BeastEater. Her story was brought to the attention of surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn, who uses the nickname @DoctorYoun on TikTok.

She used expired facial cosmetics. It ended with unpleasant consequences

A TikTok user shared with Internet users the effects of applying skin care products to her face. These were products intended for acne and problematic skin. However, not their expiration dates. She published a video in which she showed a severe infection she contracted after using what turned out to be expired cosmetics.

A plastic surgeon used her case as an example and a warning to others. Dr. Anthony Youn began to say that after applying the expired product, the woman’s skin began to burn. After washing off the product and wiping the face dry, there was visible thickening and burns, e.g. between the eyes. After four days, when she decided to go to the hospital, the doctors they diagnosed her with a bacterial infection that could have entered the bloodstream.

What happens if I use expired cosmetics? The doctor warns

The case of the TikTok user ended with curing the infection, but Dr. Youn appealed to all viewers. – Please do not apply expired products to your face – he concluded. In the comments under the video, the doctor also decided to speak up and explain why expired products can cause this type of situation.

When products expire, their chemical composition may change and bacteria may accumulate, which may contribute to this reaction.
