The head of the National Broadcasting Council is targeted by the liquidators of Polish Radio. They demand his resignation

During a conference devoted to public media, the liquidators of the regional Polish Radio stations called for the resignation of the chairman of the National Broadcasting Council, stating that he was destroying democracy.

On Wednesday at the Faculty of Political Science and Journalism of the University of A conference on public media was held at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. The event was attended by the liquidators of regional radio stations, including Cezary Wojtczak, editor-in-chief and liquidator of Polskie Radio PiK, who spoke about the penalties imposed by Maciej Świrski and actions that undermine the country’s democracy. “Maciej Świrski is destroying democracy. Free, independent media are a guarantee of citizens’ rights and freedoms. And that is why we are speaking here today with one common voice. And that is why we are calling on you to resign. We are demanding your resignation. Finally, behave honorably,” said Cezary Wojtczak .

Deficit of funds for the operation of Polish Radio’s regional stations

On February 7, the National Broadcasting Council decided to transfer the funds from the RTV license fee to a court deposit, stating that they would reach the public media only after a final court decision. However, Ewelina Kosałka-Passia, editor-in-chief of Radio Katowice, informed that, contrary to Maciej Świrski’s assurances, it is not possible to withdraw funds from court deposits because they have not been established.

“Courts all over Poland are rejecting applications for deposits because they say that Maciej Świrski has no right to apply for these deposits,” she said, adding that for regional stations, financial resources from subscriptions constitute from 60 to 85 percent of their annual budgets. Due to the non-payment of funds, Radio Kraków was to be left in the lurch. Liquidator Marcin Pulit said that the station had taken out a loan of PLN 1.2 million, and the arrears amounted to a total of PLN 3 million. Therefore, the radio limits expenses to a minimum: “Not for investments, but for current liabilities, for employee salaries,” Pulit added.
