Evangeline Lilly became a real TV star in 2004 thanks to the role of Kate Austen in the series “Lost”. After six years of working on “Lost”, she was faced with any choice of roles offered to her. By 2024, she starred in 14 more productions (the latest, “Happy Life”, is at the post-production stage and will most likely hit screens this year). And that’s it. The actress announced that she was retiring.
Evangeline Lilly ends her acting career
Even though she is only 44 years old and has been appearing on film sets for just over 20 years, Evangeline Lilly says “enough is enough”. The actress announced that she was retiring from acting and would not appear in any productions in the future. Although she did not say that this is a decision that she will never, absolutely never revoke, but it is currently her vision of the future.
Lilly also posted a video from over ten years ago on social media, in which, when asked where she sees herself around 2020-25, she replies:
Ideally, in ten years I would be a retired actress. I would like to have a family by then, write and… maybe… help other people in charity – says Evangeline Lilly, who is only 20 years old.
In her latest social media post, the actress says she is filled with “happiness and fulfillment” by following her vision.
Walking away from what seems like such an obvious choice (fame and fortune) can be scary. But when you realize it is dharma, fulfillment replaces fear. Maybe one day I will return to Hollywood, but for now, today, I am where I need to be. I’m starting a new season, and I’m ready for it – and happy – wrote Evangeline Lilly.
Importantly, the actress was supposed to retire three times, as you can read in an interview with her from a year ago in “”, but… each time she received an offer she couldn’t refuse. Scripts came along that were so compelling that she couldn’t put them down. However, leaving acting does not literally mean retirement and no job for her. Evangeline Lilly runs a non-governmental organization in Rwanda, writes books for children and has recently started producing films and writing screenplays.
In an interview last year, Lilly admitted that acting was not her dream. During her studies, she struggled financially and went to the casting only because she was told about free food on the set. Unfortunately, not everything went according to plan. Although she wanted to combine the life of an extra with the life of an international relations student, she was offered a role and… that’s how her career began, as she talked about with Jimmy Fallon. In addition to “Lost”, she played the imaginary elf Tauriel in Peter Jackson’s “Hobbit” trilogy and the Wasp in a series of Marvel films about the adventures of Ant-man.
It wasn’t always rosy either. From the beginning of her career, against her will and conversations with her agent, she was forcibly sexualized – and she had no influence on it. She played the “sharp woman”, but when she asked for a “normal” photo session during subsequent interviews, half-naked photos of her appeared on the cover, approved by her management.
