There is probably no person in the world who would not have jeans in their wardrobe. There are so many types of trouser legs and cuts to choose from that every woman will find something for herself. Most have pockets and are fastened with a zipper and one button. They have one more element in common. Each pair has metal studs. Regardless of whether you choose jeans from the latest collection or from years ago, they will have studs.
Why are there studs on jeans? Every pair of pants has had them for 151 years
It all started with the most popular jeans company in the world, Levi Strauss & Co. It was founded in 1853 and released the first jeans in May 1873. They were characterized by high-quality denim and patented reinforcing elements in the form of copper rivets. Since then, every pair has had studs and they are still present today.
However, the question remains: is it a mere decoration that has no practical use? Turns out not. In the 1870s, denim trousers were worn mainly by workers at work. The corners of the pockets were wearing out quickly, so Jacob Davis decided to increase their durability. He put rivets in the places where jeans are most likely to tear.

Rivets in jeans are not just decoration. They are like additional reinforcement of the seams
Davis was a tailor and worked with Levi Strauss. Studs could be found at the corners of the pockets and at the bottom of the zipper. In today’s models, those on the zipper are no longer so common, but those on the pockets can still be seen on many trousers. They no longer serve the same function as they used to, because they stopped being work pants a long time ago and we wear them both every day and for larger occasions. Therefore, it can be said that currently metal elements have only a decorative function, but it is worth bearing in mind that this was not always the case and that they have their own history.
