Fortunately for all of us there are many household items that you can use to relieve the burning sensation, itching and flaking that occur as a result of sun damage to the skin. You probably have some of them at home and they will bring you relief almost immediately.

Aloe is a popular choice for treating sunburn because it provides instant relief. It has been scientifically proven to aid in the healing of first- and second-degree burns, and recent studies have shown that aloe vera has anti-inflammatory properties. Although you can buy it in gel form, aloe vera can easily be used directly from the plant. Once you cut the branch off, you can see the gel inside.

You can buy oatmeal bath mix or make your own at home. Place one to two cups of whole oats in a food processor and blend to a fine powder. Run cold water and mix the blended oatmeal into the bath water. The water should be milky white in color. Immerse yourself in the bathtub for 15 minutes and then dry your skin.
Tea is our grandmothers’ remedy for sunburn
Like witch hazel, the tea contains naturally occurring tannins and antioxidants that may alleviate the symptoms of sunburn. You can use any type of tea. Black tea, however, has higher levels of tannins, and green tea is considered the most pain-relieving. Soak a cloth or cotton pad in the brewed tea that has been cooled and use it on sunburn to relieve symptoms and swelling.
