The method distracts our minds from conscious thought patterns that keep us awake. Often these are everyday things, like thinking about our worries. “It’s a way of organizing or reorganizing your thoughts, similar to shuffling a deck of cards,” explained Dr. Scott Walter. This can be done in several different ways.

  • Thinking about random words or objects that are unrelated. For example, cow, leaf, sandwich, butter, liver and the like. Just random stuff that doesn’t make sense.
  • Select a letter of the alphabet. While your heart is beating, start counting. Every eight beats, think of a word starting with this letter.
