Sweet and full of valuable ingredients, the fruits are somewhat reminiscent of blueberries and blueberries, but in many respects they are much superior to them. Despite this, the haskap berry is still not very popular. It is worth growing it in the garden, even if you have no experience in it.

Although Poland is the leader in its production, haskap berries are still not as popular as blueberries or blueberries. However, it is worth including it in your diet not only because of its taste, but also because of its health properties. Fruits are a rich source of B vitamins, vitamin A and C, as well as iron, magnet, phosphorus, silicon and phenolic compounds, i.e. antioxidants. You can easily eat it “straight from the bush”, but also in processed form, in the form of juices, jams and other preserves. And above all, you can successfully grow it in your own home.

How to grow haskap berries? Even an inexperienced gardener can handle it

Haskap berries tolerate frost and light droughts very well, although in difficult conditions it is worth preparing for weaker fruiting. Water it only during dry periods, being careful not to overwater it. The bushes do not need regular pruning, it is enough to cut the oldest shoots once every few years or when it is already very lush and the shoots cover the light of the younger ones. Importantly, fertilization is also performed rarely, only once every two or three years. The only thing to remember is to provide the bushes with plenty of light. Thanks to this, the fruit will be plump and sweet.

When and where is the best time to plant haskap berries? Choose the right place

Haskap berries ripen early, even in May, although much depends on the variety. The Polish variety Atut bears fruit in the second half of June, while Karina bears fruit from May. To enjoy a bountiful harvest, you first need to choose the right place and date to plant the bushes. When to plant haskap berries? It is best to do it in autumn, from October to November, or in early spring (April).

Choose well-sunlit place, with permeable and fertile soil, which should be enriched with compost or manure. It is worth having two varieties next to each other, which will pollinate each other. Plant the bushes in holes about 40 cm deep, at a distance of 1 m. Remember that the haskap berry can grow up to 2 m in height, so prepare enough space for it.
