Zenon Martyniuk is a figure whom Poles His hit “Through Your Green Eyes” became the anthem of many events, and his work has become a permanent part of the canon of Polish pop music. However, not everyone knows that before Martyniuk took up music, he was a successful athlete.
Youth and sports passions
In an interview with Weszlo.com Martyniuk revealed that his youthful idol was Zbigniew Boniek, a legendary Polish footballer. Martyniuk was so fascinated with football that he regularly supported the Polish national team and Jagiellonia Białystok – the club from his hometown.
Success on the track
Although Zenon Martyniuk first played football, eventually he was more interested in athletics. He attended sports classes in high school, where he practiced 100-meter sprints. “I didn’t have any great achievements, but I took part in competitions and went to training camps: to Masuria and to Szklarska Poręba. I remember that I once achieved 11.02 seconds for 100 km/h“, Martyniuk recalls. For comparison, his idol from those years, Marian Woronin, achieved a time of 10 seconds for 100 meters. “So you could say that I would have finished 11 meters behind him.”he adds with a smile.
Trainings and Competitions
Despite intense training, Martyniuk did not always lead a sports lifestyle. “There were times when I didn’t go to sleep at all, I just came straight from the game to the stadium and went to start.”, says the artist. However, his involvement in sports did not prevent him from developing his passion for music, which over time began to dominate his life.
Support for Jagiellonia Białystok
Currently, Martyniuk plays for Jagiellonia Białystok. Although he no longer plays actively, he regularly met with former club players at the arena. “I try to watch as many Jagiellonia matches from this season as possible. I often play a gig on the weekend, but I record the match and play it when I get home“, says Martyniuk.
Concert before the match
To support his favorite team, Zenon Martyniuk performed before the last match of the season between Jagiellonia and Warta Poznań. “I will sing not only ‘Through your goals, goals scored’, but also ‘Pszczółka Jaga’, a version of our ‘Pszczółka Maja’“, before the match. His performance was supposed to be additional support for the team and a form of thanks for the season full of emotions. And indeed there was no shortage of impressions, and the fans had a lot of fun. This day will remain in the fans’ memory for a long time, because Jagiellonia Białystok for the first time in history won the title of Polish champion. Moreover, the king of disco polo has already announced that he will create a new song for his beloved club.
