Daniel Olbrychski and Maryla Rodowicz met in 1973 at a banquet prepared by the organizers of Maryla’s concert. There was chemistry between them almost immediately. The actor was impressed not only by the singer’s beauty, but also by her passion for motoring. At that time, Maryla Rodowicz bought a red Porsche 914. Olbrychski thought that someone who drove such a car in the times of the Polish People’s Republic must have a fantasy. Soon he invited her to see his play.

Rodowicz about the affair with Olbrychski: “We were crazy”
It soon turned out that they were both interested in horse riding. And it was during our shared escapades that a fiery feeling emerged. “We agreed: she likes horses, I kept Bachmat in the Legia stables. We started arranging rides. Every time I helped her get on the horse or dismounted her from the saddle, I felt that there was no joke. It was like hell. And her too,” he said years later. It was in the stable that they kissed for the first time. And Maryla realized that she had fallen in love with Olbrychski.
“We were crazy. We managed to ride horses for two days, on horseback, from Warsaw to Drohiczyn, Daniel’s hometown. 120 km one way! And back too! It took us two days through fields and forests, we slept on some hay, we went to pubs along the way as if to some Wild West salons, pulling horses next to bus stops! – this is what Rodowicz said later.
In Drohiczyn they lived for a month in his grandmother’s house. Rodowicz clearly remembered the iron bed with a hole in the mattress in the middle. – We fell into this pit. I remember this narrow iron bed very well – she recalled in an interview with “Viva”.
Unfortunately, the romantic story also has its dark side. Daniel Olbrychski had a wife at that time – Monika Dzienisiewicz. When he told her about his affair, she did not want to give him a divorce. He, in turn, was not willing to engage in a court battle and publicly “wash his dirty linen”. When she gave him the ultimatum “it’s either me or her”, he left the house.
A tragedy has happened
It soon turned out that Maryla Rodowicz was pregnant. Unfortunately, she had a miscarriage. “We wanted to have children. Unfortunately, Maryla had a miscarriage. She worked too much, she couldn’t protect herself. Maybe she later learned from it, because she gave birth to a fantastic couple to Krzysztof Jasiński: Jaś and Kaśka. I think they are very successful children,” admitted Olbrychski . After this tragedy, they began to distance themselves from each other. She fell into a whirlwind of work, and he sought escape in alcohol.
I drank a lot. Marilla often found me drunk when she returned, or she didn’t find me at all. She was looking for me at my mother’s, at Adam and Zosia Hanuszkiewicz’s, our friends. She didn’t find it. We passed each other. Literally and figuratively… Seemingly minor misunderstandings broke out that we attached more importance to than they deserved. We didn’t get along in bed. There was still no divorce…
