An excellent actor, winner of many awards and distinctions, but in his private life he was not always lucky. He was married four times, and with his third wife, Ewa Żukowska, he had a daughter, Katarzyna. In the last years of his life, Kopiczyński was suffering from a cruel disease that took away his consciousness and memories.

Andrzej Kopiczyński made his debut on the silver screen in 1957 in “The True End of the Great War”. A year later, he graduated from the Łódź Film School and his career gained momentum. He appeared on theater stages, was a TV presenter, starred in many films and, but The role of Stefan Karwowski in “The Forty-Year-Old Man” brought him the greatest recognition.. However, fame turned into a curse because the actor never got rid of the label of engineer Karwowski. He was depressed by offers of supporting roles or episodes, and in an interview with Bohdan Kuncewicz, “Gwiazdy obnażone”, he revealed his emotions about the series role:

The beginning was a source of constant joy for me, and then sadness, because I couldn’t hide anywhere and there was no offer again. And if there were any, they were only Mr. Karwowski’s derivatives.

The tragic end of love. He did not remember the death of his beloved wife

He had a relationship with his fourth wife, Monika Dzienisiewicz, that lasted almost 40 years. The couple met in 1977 on the set of the TV series “Życie na hot”. They were together through thick and thin, and when the actor fell ill, she was responsible for all the caregiving responsibilities. In 2014, Kopiczyński, at the age of 80, received a devastating diagnosis from doctors. He was diagnosed with rapidly progressing Alzheimer’s disease. The disease was destroying him day by day, and his wife took care of him bravely. She did not want to send him to a nursing home and spent most of the time caring for and looking after her ailing husband herself. In an interview she confessed:

The disease does not regress, but as if it had been stopped. Andrzej is under great care. Looks very good. He’s in really good shape, but obviously he can’t play anymore. He has problems with memory and hearing. But he rebels and throws away all the hearing aids I buy for him

In 2016, the actor’s condition deteriorated so much that he did not know what was happening around him. At that time, a tragedy occurred which Andrzej Kopiczyński was unaware of due to his illness. His beloved wife died of a massive stroke.

I was very worried when I found out that Monisia was dead… Very… Andrzej doesn’t even know that his wife is dead. Now his family and friends will take care of him. There is his daughter… I didn’t reach him. He is in a very serious condition, his consciousness is impaired…

A wooden cross and piled earth. For 5 years, the actor’s grave was very modest

Andrzej Kopiczyński was buried at Powązki Cemetery in Warsaw. The actor’s daughter Katarzyna did not place a monument on her father’s grave for 5 years. A mound of earth surrounded by stones with a wooden cross in front – a very modest burial for such a famous actor, but the daughter could not afford anything else at that moment. Even though she lacked money for a monument, due to her father’s political views, she did not want to take up the offer of the Ministry of Culture. In an interview with l she confessed:

I appreciate the gesture from the Ministry of Culture and thank you for the offer. I cannot and will not accept help from a government I do not accept. My dad certainly wouldn’t want it either. Even if it meant resting under a spruce branch for years.
