Ryszard Kozik (): “The mystery of the dinosaur” (text: Martin Widmark, illustrations: Helena Willis) is the 31st volume in the Lasse and Mai Detective Bureau series. An exhibition presenting a complete tyrannosaurus skeleton has come to Valleba. During its opening, it turns out that one of the bones has disappeared. Who stole it and why purpose? Why did the bells ring a moment earlier and will the exhibition organizer, Barbara Palm, lose a lot of money?
Marta Korycka (): I love this series. I even read it earlier, when they were five or six years old, with my older son, I read it with my younger son, and I bought the latest part right after its premiere, and the older one reads it to the younger one, and I listen. By the way, I also recommend movies – they’re not even adaptations of books, because productions with Lasso and Maja tell stories that you won’t find in books, so it’s an additional attraction.
Anna Kowal (): Do you have little fans of logic puzzles at home? “Mazes and puzzles for superbrains” (Our Bookstore) has almost 80 funny puzzles perfect for training your brain cells. You can solve them on your own, with a little help, you can also challenge your parents logically. Who of you will dare to test your perceptiveness?
Ryszard: The “Read to Myself” series (Harper Kids) comes to the aid of those learning to read. It’s a three-tier program. “Tram number 28” Rafał Witek is a book on the first level – the sentences are very short and the whole story is less than 200 words. In addition to practicing word formation, children will learn the history of the symbol of Lisbon, which impresses with its yellow wagon driving along the most picturesque route in the city. “Mr. Pit and his flower Justyna Bednarek is a story about a botanist, a tireless seeker of new plant species, who discovers an unknown flower! Here we get a much longer story (800-900 words), the sentences are more complex, and there are also elements of dialogue. For the most advanced I recommend “Fire in the factory” by Ewa Nowak. The heroine of the book is Róża, who belongs to the Youth Fire Team… Her brother would also like to put out fires. Unfortunately, instead of performing heroic deeds, he makes a series of very dangerous decisions. You can see that these are books for experienced readers. Fortunately, after There will be a reward for reading, six colorful stickers referring to the story read.
Anna: “School and me. We build self-esteem” (Nasza Księgarnia) by Ewa Borkowska is a book for children starting school. Antek and Zosia have high self-esteem. That is: they think well of themselves, they like themselves, they know what they are good at, they believe in themselves and are satisfied with themselves … The author wants your children to build self-esteem as well.
Richard: “Antarctica. Melting continent” Karen Romano Young (This-that) is an invitation to a fascinating journey around Antarctica. Get to know its wild nature and spend time with animals living above and under the ice – penguins, elephant seals and orcas. Find out how scientists cope in such conditions, how observing climate changes and examining ice cores. During the trip, you will also learn how this unique place is changing and what these changes mean for our entire planet.
Marta: And Kocia Szajka, which my younger son and many of his peers like very much, is traveling a bit closer this time – from Cieszyn to Bielsko-Biała. There he must solve another puzzle. They go to the local Cartoon Film Studio to help Morpheus the cat discover his family roots. It looks like his dad played alongside Reksio. “Kocia Szajka and lost fairy tales” (Agora for Children) is the eighth part of Agata Romaniuk’s series. There are stories I like more, there are those that draw me in less, but the six-year-old absorbs each one. We both, however, are always delighted with Malwina Hajduk’s illustrations. I also know that they are a sensation in school library.
However, slightly older students, such as 9+, can go to Japan and explore it with a local cat. Son got “Cat paths. Japan” by Jolanta Jaworska (Mamania) for her birthday, because she has been very interested in those regions for some time. And since she also likes cats, it’s a perfect combination! Kotaru the cat, among other things, shows the reader around Tokyo, talks a little about history, geography and teaches a few phrases .I also like the ethereal illustrations.
Anna: “Gratitude journal” and “Positive” (Zielona Sowa) are small diaries. You can color them and decorate the pages with stickers. Inside there are slogans that help build self-confidence and improve your well-being. In the “Gratitude Diary” you will find, among others, “My week” with repetitive issues on each day of a selected week – the weather, mood, what interesting things happened, what my goals are, what I am grateful for, etc. In “Pozytywnik” there are plenty of tips on how to start the day to make it successful. There are places for friends’ entries, dream maps, feelings and thoughts, a place to write down challenges and dreams.
Ryszard: I also recommend the book “Blue. An illustrated history of color” by Cristiana Valentini (Nasza Księgarnia). What do you see first when you think about the color blue? Have you ever wondered what the story is behind humanity’s favorite color? The author reveals to us the amazing fate of the blue color – from Egyptian blue from the tombs of the pharaohs, through blues Islamic art, ultramarine from van Gogh’s paintings, up to the present day. You will see that this color has changed its meaning in different civilizations and eras. For some it was the color of gods, for others it was the color of mourning, and for others it was the color of freedom…
Anna: Nobody can describe the world from the perspective of children like Scandinavian authors. The heroine of the book “It’s me” (text: Emma Adbåge, illustrations: Emma Adbåge, Nooks) Mika will soon be eight years old. She doesn’t show up very often in classes, so the teacher thinks she’s shy. But Mika doesn’t think of herself as such at all. She just doesn’t always feel like it. do what other children do, or answer questions that you know the answer to. Mika is afraid of drills in the school workshop. He doesn’t like rough things and yogurt with pieces. But he likes rabbits and his friend Penny. she’s the best in her class at it!
Marta: Speaking of Scandinavian authors, we came across a book “Tonia from Glimmerdalen” from Two Sisters. The son received the 2021 edition from his aunt, but a new one was also released in April. It’s a story about a nine-year-old girl with a shock of red hair, whom the inhabitants of her village call “the little rascal”… sounds familiar? There’s a reason for that They call Maria Parr “the new Astrid Lindgren”, but there is no question of plagiarism here, of course.
Richard: “Mira #3” (text: Sabine Lemire, illustrations: Rasmus Bregnhøi, Corners) is the third volume of a lively and funny series for “younger teenagers”. Living in two families at once is not easy! Mira quarrels with little Bror and has the feeling that her father does not care about her she doesn’t understand. Isn’t it her dad? Or maybe there’s a clue hidden in her mother’s diaries? And her body still gives her strange surprises… It’s good that Mira’s friends are always nearby! : they start an art club and decide to prepare a real exhibition of modern works of art. But it’s not easy to focus on creating the installation when Jonas, Livy’s charming cousin, appears in the area.
Anna: It’s time for the book “Action dogs. Gabi has a plan” (Michaele Assarasakorn, Nathan Fairbairn, Nasza Księgarnia). Gabi, Priya and Mindy are best friends. They differ in almost every respect – character, passions and family situations, but they have one thing in common – they love dogs! Unfortunately, none of them can have a pet at home, so they come up with an idea on how to deal with it. They will take neighborhood dogs for walks! It turns out, however, that running such a project together is much more difficult than it seems…
Ryszard Kozik: It’s very cool”Robofactory. Food plant” by Ewelina Garbula (Zielona Sowa). Thanks to Robomir the Robot, we learn how the digestive system works and what it consists of. The robot shows us around the organism shown as… a factory. We learn about unusual machines and mechanisms, the principles of their operation and the processes taking place inside us.
Marta: I always wonder to what extent we should show children such things literally and to what extent we should translate them into other worlds. As for the latter, I prefer the method from the cult “Once Upon a Life”.
Anna: And I recommend two more nice books from Zielona Sowa. The first one is “Take care of me. Ptysia disappeared” Holly Web. Iza is nervous about moving to her mother’s new husband and his son Szymek. However, when she finds out that the boy has just adopted a puppy, she can’t wait to play together and go for walks with little Ptysia. When Szymon visits her mother, the dog stays under her care. Iza’s care. The girl sees that the puppy misses Szymek very much, so she arranges a video call for them, but unfortunately the image on the laptop screen scares Ptysia, who runs away…
The second book is “Zosia and her Zoo. Concerned wombat” by Amelia Cobb. Zosia lives in the Zoo Asylum. The girl loves animals and… understands their speech! The family of animals living in the zoo has grown once again. Wombats have arrived from Australia. Zosia really wants the animals to feel at home in the asylum, but little Wiola is still worried about something…
