For about half a year, a certain Warsaw restaurant has been giving Catholics sleepless nights. Protests regarding the closure of the premises began immediately after its opening, and subsequent demonstrations did not erase the place from the map of Warsaw, but effectively promoted it.
Catholics do not give up. There will be another gathering at the Madonna
In January 2024, the Internet circulated a recording of an elderly woman who was so concerned about the sinful restaurant and the fate of the souls visiting the temple that she prostrated herself in front of the place. The next rosary “in the intention of closing the blasphemous restaurant” was planned by the Youth Crusade and Catholic, non-secular Poland for May 31, just after Corpus Christi.
This time, the organizations detailed their reservations about the Madonna restaurant, which still operates at Plac Konstytucji in Warsaw. “Let us not continue to spit on the saints and insult God!” – we read in the description of the event on Facebook. How does the restaurant offend Catholics? Seven points appeared on the website.
They want Madonna to be closed in Warsaw. They wrote out a list of points
The organizers of the rosary for the closing of the Madonna emphasize that they do not like the figure of the Virgin Mary “among vulgar neon signs” that invites people for drinks. This probably refers to quotes such as: “not today Satan” and “I’d rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints”, “what f*ck have you done” and a humorous neon sign at the entrance suggesting that customers are not entering a pub but a shop with erotic gadgets.
Catholics also don’t like the fact that “rosaries are hanging on alcohol bottles.” Another scandalous gadget for them is the OR code from the menu attached to plastic figurines of the Virgin Mary placed on the tables. “The blasphemous images depict Our Lady smoking cigarettes” (could it be David Bowie in a robe?) – we read in the points written by the event organizers. “The image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was also desecrated,” we read. The objections probably refer to numerous photographs in which celebrities such as Rihanna or Keanu Reeves are depicted in poses and costumes of Jesus and the Virgin Mary.
The penultimate point is against the “photo-taking confessional” placed in the restaurant. You won’t find this element in dozens of photos and Instagram reels recorded at the premises. Perhaps it is not as popular among visitors as the neon signs and photographs on the walls, or Madonna was accidentally assigned a piece of furniture that can be found in another Warsaw venue – the Hydrozagadka club. The list ends with objections to “references to Satan” to be included in the restaurant.
