“Furiosa” disappoints with its results, and it had it easier. Success in Cannes didn’t help, will the next part not be made?

The weekend opening of the latest part of George Miller’s Mad Max saga disappointed the creators’ expectations. “Furiosa” earned much less than its predecessor from 2015. Does this mean the end of the film universe?

“Everything seems to be fine here – the duo of Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth is a great duo, there are the same chases that bought us in “Fury Road”, there are the same disgusting characters… And yet you can leave the cinema and be moved by “Furiosa” shoulders. The revenge of the main character leaves a feeling of dissatisfaction. For me, the film is a step back in the universe and I do not intend to return to this part of “Mad Max” – writes Magda Walma from kuli.gazeta.pl about the latest production in the Mad Max saga.

“Furiosa” disappointed with its box office results

George Miller’s latest work delighted foreign viewers and critics. Production has reached 90 percent. on the freshness scale on Rotten Tomatoes in both reviewer and audience ratings. Polish journalists are a bit more strict. On Filmweb, the average rating on a ten-star scale was 6.3. “More, stronger, louder does not always mean better, better, better,” writes MichaƂ Walkiewicz. “It’s nice to enter this world again, and young Furiosa delights. But then there’s a reunion and neither Anya nor Chris fully fulfills their promise,” adds Tomasz Raczek.

As it turns out, the enthusiasm that “Furiosa” caused in Cannes did not translate into its financial results. The previous part of the Mad Max saga earned $45.4 million on its opening weekend. The result of George Miller’s latest work turned out to be much lower. “Furiosa” grossed an estimated $31 million during the weekend before Memorial Day, which typically brings record annual box office revenues. For U.S. theaters, it’s the worst opening weekend including a holiday in nearly three decades, Deadline reports.

The next part of the Mad Max saga is questionable

The disappointing result of “Furiosa” is bad news for George Miller and fans of the universe. The drop in earnings compared to the previous part of the Mad Max saga may mean that the next part will not be made. The film cost $168 million to make a return on the investment, but it must earn a lot more because the budget for promoting the production was not included in the amount.
