After the film “Farewells”, Maria Wachowiak was on the threshold of a great international career. Although Hollywood itself claimed the young actress, she gave up the chance given by fate to marry Gustaw Holoubek.

Maria Wachowiak met Gustaw Holoubek in 1958 on the set of “Farewell” directed by Wojciech Jerzy Has. The then 19-year-old actress took on the role of his wife, and soon afterwards became his wife in reality.

For his very young colleague from the set, Holoubek left Danuta Kwiatkowska, with whom he already had a daughter, Ewa. Wachowiak, in turn, broke up with Marian Kociniak, who was completely in love with her. Even after many years, the actor did not spare compliments to his former partner in interviews.

In 1960, Wachowiak graduated from the State Theater School in Warsaw and then started working at the Powszechny Theater in Łódź. Two years later, she married Holoubek, with whom she had a daughter, Magdalena.

The actress had a special feeling for her husband – for him she was able to give up everything, even her dream international career. When the US label approached Wachowiak with a contract offer, she refused, claiming that Gustaw could not be left alone with all his responsibilities. “I thought that Gustaw was such a great artist that he shouldn’t do anything other than art,” the actress explained in an interview.

While Holoubek was climbing to the heights of acting fame, Wachowiak remained in her husband’s shadow, contenting herself with minor roles. However, she sacrificed her career in vain, as soon after she shared the fate of her husband’s previous wife.

On the set of the play “Life is a Dream”, the actor met Magdalena Zawadzka, who was 20 years younger than himself, and, as in the case of Wachowiak, he decided to file for a divorce in order to be able to formally commit to his new beloved. Holoubek’s relatives tried to convince him not to abandon his next wife, but he did not intend to listen to them.

Shortly afterwards, Maria Wachowiak was left alone with her daughter Magdalena. Years later, the woman admitted that her father was not involved in her upbringing: “My dad no longer took part in my upbringing. We saw each other on my birthday or on holidays. He always said he loved me,” admitted Wachowiak’s daughter in one of the interviews.

In the 1980s, Wachowiak became involved with Marcin Idziński, with whom she decided to go to Germany. Their son Bartek was also born there. Maria got involved in working for Radio Free Europe and appeared in German productions. She tragically died in a car accident in 2019. She was 80 years old then.
