Petunia: watering is a key issue in the care of balcony plants. You can’t forget about him!

Petunia – watering is one of the most important things when it comes to growing plants. However, this is not the only issue that should be taken into account when planning to have petunias in the garden or on the balcony. Here are some useful tips.

Petunia is one of the most popular species of balcony plants. It owes its popularity to its exceptionally abundant flowering, wide range of colors, and simplicity of cultivation. What is worth knowing when deciding to grow petunias?

Petunia: plan watering just before or after sunset

Petunia – watering this or any other plant is very important. Contrary to appearances, they have their own preferences regarding the amount of water. There are some that cannot be dried out, but there are also some that are harmed by excess water. In some cases, you even have to be careful not to wet the leaves when watering. In the case of petunias, it is recommended to water them regularly to prevent the soil from drying out. Short periods of drier surfaces are tolerated well, but it is still not worth making this happen. Therefore, on hot summer days you sometimes need to water them even twice a day. It is worth remembering not to water the plant when there is full sun in the sky – we may accidentally “burn” the flowers or leaves. It is better to plan watering for early morning or late afternoon.

Petunia – growing it is extremely simple and pleasant

We most often see this plant in balcony boxes, but it can also grow in the garden, planted in the ground. It is important to plant it after any spring frosts, because it does not tolerate them well. Therefore, in practice, it is most often planted in the ground at the end of May.

Growing petunia and growing it on the balcony is similar – it should not be exposed if there is a risk of frost. Regardless of whether it is planted as a potted or garden plant, it should be chosen in a well-sunny place. It should also be protected from the wind, and the soil should be humus, permeable and fertile.

Dangling petunia, i.e. surfinia

It is an extremely beautiful plant that looks wonderful in pots – especially when hung so that its flowers can cascade down freely. Thanks to its hanging shoots, it is sometimes called the queen. Hanging petunia is not a difficult plant to grow. Therefore, both beginners and those with more experience in gardening can confidently start growing it, although there are minor differences here too. The easiest way to grow it is to buy a ready-made seedling or even the whole plant rather than expecting it to grow from seeds. This requires a little more knowledge. Surfinias are considered annual plants. The available colors include: pink, red, white, blue.

When it comes to watering and soil, they basically require exactly the same conditions as ordinary petunias, i.e. it cannot be abundant watering to prevent the soil from getting wet. However, you cannot allow them to dry out, so on hot days it may be necessary to water them twice a day. The soil should be humus, fertile and permeable.

Petunia – varieties that most often appear on balconies and terraces

Petunia is certainly one of the most graceful balcony flowers. Varieties that can be found and will look beautiful include:

  • Pendula,
  • Media,
  • Nana,

When choosing a specific variety, you need to consider which features of these beautiful flowers are important to us and choose accordingly. Some have very impressive shoots, others have shorter ones. In addition to all this, there is also a multitude of colors that will definitely decorate any balcony or garden.

How to care for petunias?

Petunias are annual plants, so you can enjoy them here and now. Even if we overwinter the plant in a cool place at home, it may not have as many flowers later in the season as the previous season. How to care for petunias? You should ensure proper watering to avoid the soil getting wet or dry. In addition, choose a suitable, sunny place and protect it from possible frosts.
