Spielberg recalls working with Drew Barrymore on the set of “ET”: I felt helpless

Drew Barrymote is currently one of the most popular actresses in the world. She started her career as a teenager, but she could not count on responsible care from her parents. Director Steven Spielberg noticed this on the set of the film “ET” and decided to take care of the seven-year-old actress. In a recent interview, he said that he couldn’t bear to see the girl left alone.

Drew Barrymore is one of the stars who started her adventure with cameras at a very young age. When she was less than one year old, she was hired to advertise dog food, and at the age of seven she played the role of Gertie in the family film “ET” directed by Steven Spielberg. The film is of great importance to both of them, and critics still consider it one of the best science-fiction productions.

Drew Barrymore’s life was different from her peers. Steven Spielberg decided to take care of her

In an interview with the “” portal, the famous director mentioned Drew Barrymore’s difficult childhood, which he had the opportunity to observe. He admitted that watching an almost seven-year-old girl over whom no one had any control was extremely painful for him.

She didn’t go to bed at a normal bedtime for a child, she went to places she should only hear about, and she led a lifestyle that I believe robbed her of her childhood. But I felt very helpless because I wasn’t her father. I could only be a sort of advisor to her, said the three-time Oscar winner.

Her biological father, John Drew Barrymore, was an alcoholic. That’s why one day 7-year-old Drew Barrymore decided to ask Spielberg if he would be her father. The director agreed to become her godfather, and the young actress began to spend a lot of time with his family. She even stayed with him on weekends, he gave her a cat she named Gertie, and he took her on trips to Disneyland.

She was a child idol in the United States, but her childhood was not a bed of roses. Her mother took her to a nightclub

Even as an adult, she talked a lot about her traumatic childhood. He entered the world of show business thanks to his mother, who was an unfulfilled actress. In this way, she wanted to realize her unfulfilled ambitions and forced her daughter to work in front of the camera, earning money from it.

Drew Barrymore revealed more about her childhood in her 2015 autobiography, “Wild Flower.” We can read there that when she was less than nine years old, her mother took her to the Studio 54 nightclub. It was also there that she took drugs for the first time, which caused her to have mental health problems. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the actress is still very grateful to Spielberg for taking care of her.

He was always good, loving and caring to me. If it weren’t for him, my life would have turned out completely different. I certainly wouldn’t be where I am now, she said in an interview for The Wall Street Journal.
