César Román, because this is him we are talking about, is from Spain and became famous as the “King of Cachopo”, i.e. deep-fried steak with ham and cheese, beloved in that region. When the news about his culinary specialties spread around the area, he decided to use the popularity to create his own business. That’s how he opened his first pub, and later others, attracting crowds. However, his prosperous business fell into ruin when all the shenanigans he had committed over the years were revealed.
From “King Cachopo” to bankrupt. Scandals ruined César Román’s business
The most popular of Román’s restaurants was the one called “A Cañada”, and he was awarded many prestigious awards for the dishes served there. However, it quickly turned out to be a complete lie. Journalists from the magazine “El Pais” found that the vast majority of the statuettes were simply fakes, and the business does not bring profits, only losses. It turned out that the cook had also forged checks, extorted money from suppliers and failed to pay employees due wages. The news about the bankruptcy of “King Cachopo” spread quickly, but a much bigger scandal was caused by reports related to his private life.
For years, he mentally and physically abused his wife, Natividad, with whom he had a child. The couple divorced in 2017. The woman even obtained a restraining order after her ex-husband killed their three dogs and threatened to kill her too. Perhaps if he had been held responsible then, another incident would not have happened.
He murdered his partner. He hid under a false name for months. “King Cachapo” is serving his sentence
After breaking up with his wife, Roman started a relationship with 25-year-old Heidi Paz, who worked as a waitress in one of his establishments. At some point, the woman stopped contacting her family and on July 23, 2018, her mother reported her missing. From the beginning she claimed that the cook was definitely involved in the case. According to her account, the girl wanted to leave him because of his aggression and morbid jealousy, but there was no evidence for this, especially since he also disappeared without a trace.
Shortly afterwards, there was a fire in one of the warehouses belonging to Román’s restaurant. During the inspection of the place, a suitcase with… a woman’s torso was found. However, the body was in a significant state of decomposition and only DNA tests revealed that it was Heidi, who had disappeared several months ago. The cook immediately became the main suspect, and the investigation led the police to Saragrossa, where he worked using false information. He was detained, but he pleaded not guilty, trying to avoid any suspicions. He was eventually brought to justice and in June 2021 he was sentenced to 15 years in prison. He still maintains his innocence. However, in the documentary “Recipe for Murder” he confessed that if he had taken responsibility for the 25-year-olds, he would certainly have been released sooner.
