The next Premio Planeta will receive one million euros, thus becoming the world’s highest paid literary award, above the Nobel.
This was announced this Thursday by the president of Grupo Planeta, José Creuheras, on the eve of the ceremony in which the winner will be announced and presided over by the kings. “We are going to increase the prize money to one million euros, therefore, practically double it “, has indicated.
This will also be a very special edition, in which 654 original novels have been submitted, a record of candidate works. All this, after a year marked by the pandemic and especially complicated for booksellers. A guild to which Creuheras wanted to thank: “You know that they have had a very difficult time, bookstores have had to reinvent themselves, they have delivered books at home”
Also, on its 70th anniversary, seven of the 10 novels Finalists for the Planeta Prize are presented under pseudonym. According to Juan Eslava Galán, member of the jury, “this year there is a predominance of thriller and historical novel and sometimes a lucky mix of the two. ”
