Garlic peels most often end up in the garbage bin or composter. However, few people know that they can be used wisely and given a second life. This way we will gain a valuable weapon in the fight against time.

Garlic is one of the basic products in the kitchen. Not without reason. Given that it is full of both flavor and nutrients, it is also great outside. It is also better to save the shells that usually end up in the trash.

What can garlic peels be used for? They will act as a preservative for vegetables

Garlic is known for its health properties and is called a natural antibiotic. Garlic peels, like the cloves themselves, have a characteristic taste and smell thanks to the presence of a compound called allicin. It has many advantages, including the ability to penetrate cells against the harmful effects of free radicals. They can be successfully used in the garden, in the pantry or refrigerator. All you need to do is collect some garlic peels and scatter them on the vegetables. In this way you will protect vegetables against rotting. Moreover, they will prevent some diseases and pests, such as the Colorado potato beetle, aphids and some fungi.

Do not throw away garlic peels. Compost them or use them as plant fertilizer

You can always save the garlic peels and add them to the compost. Gardeners water crops and plants with garlic decoctions and infusions to provide plants with additional nutrients (potassium, calcium and phosphorus) that can help them develop. Garlic fertilizer can be applied in the seedling, vegetation, flowering and fruiting phase of plants. Additionally, the same fertilizer also acts as a natural insect repellent that can protect plants.

How to use garlic peels on plants? Prepare the following infusion recipe, then water the plants as usual.

  1. In a glass jar with a lid, mix about 1 liter of water with 1/3 to 1/2 of the whole garlic head, including the skins.
  2. Mix thoroughly, close and shake.
  3. Leave for about 24 hours in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight.
  4. Remove the skins and the infusion will be ready for use.
