Enya was born on May 17, 1961 in Gaoth Dobhair in the north of Ireland and was the fourth of nine siblings. Her parents were amateur musicians, her father even had his own band, in which she took her first steps on the stage together with her brothers and sisters. As a child, she eagerly attended singing competitions and performed in school plays, but she began her professional career only at the age of 19, joining Clannad, in which she played keyboards.
Her albums have sold 80 million copies. Today, Enya is one of the richest artists in the music industry
The group’s manager and producer was Nicky Ryan, who recognized its above-average skills and potential from the very beginning. It was on his advice that after 2 years she decided to focus on her solo career. It was then that her unique musical style was developed, which was a combination of Celtic, folk sounds, church and classical music, complemented by poetic lyrics written by Roma Ryna, the wife of her manager.
In 1987, Enya made her debut on the recording market with an album which included mainly songs created for the documentary “The Celts”. A year later, she released another album, “Watermark”, which she promoted with the song “Orinoco Flow”, still considered one of the biggest hits in her repertoire. In the following years, she released 6 more albums, including the last one in 2015, which sold a total of 80 million copies, making her one of the richest women in the world of music.
She never wanted or started a family. Enya, 63, lives in a castle near Dublin
Although Enya was successful professionally, she had, among others, 7 World Music Awards, 4 Grammy Awards, as well as a nomination for a Golden Globe, her private life has always been shrouded in mystery. The singer was reluctant to give interviews, and her presence at music events was rare. – Music is what sells. Not me or what I stand for. I’ve always wanted to do this – years ago in one of my interviews.
Even though she grew up in a large family, she never wanted to become a mother herself, and she never even appeared in public with any man. “I’m afraid of marriage because I’m afraid someone might want me because of who I am, not because they love me,” she explained.
She cut herself off from the outside world by purchasing a Victorian castle near Dublin worth approximately £2.5 million. The 63-year-old has been living and composing in the estate surrounded by a high wall for years and consistently emphasizes that she has no intention of changing it.
