It’s Christmas Eve! Is there fasting on this day? Doubts are dispelled by the Episcopate

Christmas Eve in which fasting is in force. Hence, it is often necessary to abstain from eating meat at home, also during the evening dinner. Do we really have to give up meat on this day? We advise.

Christmas Eve begins. Is there a meat fasting on this day?

Spokesman of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, Fr. Leszek Gęsiak emphasized that cultivating the tradition of fasting on December 24 is, however, not obligatory according to the provisions of canon law. However, due to the fact that this year’s Christmas Eve falls on a Friday, which is known as the day of penance, fasting is obligatory.

Christmas Eve and Fasting: The revision of the text of the Church’s commandments contains specific recommendations

Detailed recommendations regarding the use of fasting on Christmas Eve are included in the Polish Bishops’ Conference of March 13, 2014, in which we can read that:

Abstention from meat foods is obligatory on Ash Wednesday and on Fridays throughout the year, with the exception of celebrations. It applies to everyone who is fourteen years of age or older. You are encouraged to exercise moderation also on Christmas Eve.

Can you eat meat on Christmas Eve? The final decision is up to the diocese

As Fr. Leszek Gęsiak, the fast is therefore valid. However, there may be exceptions to this situation, if the diocesan bishops announce a dispensation in their dioceses, they release from the observance of this provision of ecclesiastical law on that day.
