Abadia, Abadie, Abbadia, D’Abbadie… How to unify the writing of the names of authorities?

Euskal Autoritateen Lantaldea and Eusko Ikaskuntza have signed a collaboration agreement along the lines of an initiative launched in 2017 by professionals from the libraries and documentation centers of the seven territories of Euskal Herria and the Basque diaspora.

The objective of this project is “to establish the common, standardized and regulated form of authority records (names, nicknames or titles) that are included in bibliographies”, and the proposed forms have been compiled on the autoritateak.eus website.

In this portal, the files with the names of the authorities with their variants, accepted or not accepted forms are housed, which will be available for open consultation.

In the opinion of the president of Eusko Ikaskuntza, Ana Urkiza, “this is an initiative with a vision for the country and of general interest, which will facilitate the dissemination and access of Basque production, as well as the promotion of Basque, and with the virtue to involve collaboration between cultural and academic institutions of the seven territories of Euskal Herria and the Basque diaspora”.

Idoia Sobrino, member of Euskal Autoritateen Lantaldea, for her part, has cited professionals and institutions that contribute to the implementation and expansion of this tool, which will grow in the coming years: BILKETA Sarea (IKAS Pedagogia Zentroa, Euskal Museoa, Biblioteca de Baionako and Library of the University of Pau and the Adour Country, UPPA), ASNABI (Navarra Association of Librarians), Basque Government (Library Service, Euskariana, HABE Liburutegia and EIMA Katalogoa), Azkue Library of Euskaltzaindia and Jon Library Bilbao from the University of Reno.
