She was a respected Polish poet and activist in the times of the Polish People’s Republic. She was considered a tough and unyielding woman, but the tragic death of her son broke her. The trials regarding the murder of Grzegorz Przemyk dragged on for many years.

Barbara Sadowska is the author of nine books. She belonged to the Polish Writers’ Union and was an activist of the democratic opposition. She also printed her poems in the so-called second circulation, among others, in the “Zapis” magazine. She was in a relationship with Leopold Przemyk, with whom she had a son, Grzegorz. However, the couple separated, and Sadowska raised the child alone.

She often organized parties and social gatherings at home, which she couldn’t give up. – There were days when a good mother came out of Baśka. Then she went shopping and cooked dinner. But it also happened that instead of dinner there was vodka on the table – Marta Kucharska, who lived in Sadowska’s house.

Her son Grzegorz was interested in literature and wrote poems. In 1983, he and his friends celebrated their high school leaving exams. At Castle Square, they approached them and demanded to see their documents. Grzegorz refused, so the officers took him to the police station at Jezuicka Street. He was beaten so severely that he was transported to the hospital in Hoża Street. Doctors wanted to place him in a psychiatric facility, but Barbara Sadowska did not agree and took her son home. – Grześ was put on a stretcher. I also saw that saliva and blood were leaking from his mouth, but I didn’t realize what had actually happened and how serious my child’s condition was – during the court hearing.

What happened to Grzegorz Przemyk? Trials regarding his death lasted for years

Grzegorz’s condition worsened and the next day he was hospitalized again. But it was too late. The injuries he suffered were too serious for doctors to save him. He died and the police organized a fictitious trial, in which paramedics and the doctor treating Przemyk were accused. After her son’s death, Barbara Sadowska broke down. – I held her in my arms because she had no strength to stand – Ligia Urniaż-Grabowska, the poet’s friend.

The poet died of lung cancer three years after her son passed away. Grzegorz’s story was presented in the film “Less There Be No Traces” directed by Jan P. Matuszyński. Przemyk’s death was one of the most famous deaths of the Polish People’s Republic. Although two hospital employees and a doctor were convicted in the trial, after 1989 the case returned to court again. Several trials took place, but only in May 2008 did the District Court in Warsaw find one of the militiamen guilty. The man was sentenced to eight years, but the sentence was ultimately overturned by the Court of Appeal. If you feel like it, vote in our poll below.
