The Musical Fortnight has its musical proposal ready, “ready to be enjoyed”
The Musical Fortnight is already an essential event in August in San Sebastián. This year, the music festival will celebrate, between August 1 and 31, its 85th edition in the main cultural spaces of the city and also in other locations in Gipuzkoa, Araba, Navarra and Lapurdi.
With music as fuel, the festival claims in its programming “travel and exoticism”, and, in that sense, it has programmed the opera Carmen by Bizet (own production) and the Egyptian Concert de Saint-Saëns, in addition to, for example, a meeting in Arantzazu between the Galician musician Abraham Cupeiro, Eñaut Elorrieta, Oreka TX and Agus Barandiaran.
Furthermore, the listener will travel with Shostakovich to the country of the Cossacks, “with Prokofiev to the almost disappeared world of the Jews of Eastern Europe, with Ravel to the East of the Arabian Nights or with Stravinsky to the magical confines of Russia… We will learn about the adventures of travelers such as the Galician Egeria, the Genoese Marco Polo, or the Czech composer, writer and rebel Krystof Harant” they explain from the Fortnight.
Choral music also has an important place in the festival’s programming. This year, two groups “with international projection” will join the local choral groups: Bach Collegium Japan and Cappella Mariana.
Along with orchestras such as the Orchester Philharmonique du Luxembourg, the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala of Milan, the Budapest Festival Orchestra and the Orchester Philharmonique de Radio France, the August concerts will serve to see such important soloists as conductors Gustav Gimeno and Riccardo on stage. Cailly, pianist Bruce Liu, violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, cellist Sol Gabetta and young pianist Alexandra Dovgan.
On the other hand, this year’s edition hosts more than a dozen events with dance: Compagnie Käfig, Flamenco Company… In addition, on the opening day Kresala Dantza Taldea will honor Eduardo Chillida with a premiere of his work Hiru in it Wind Comb.
Not just Chillida; Nestor Basterretxea will also be honored on the centenary of the birth of both artists. In this case, it will be in Hondarribia, in an organ and accordion concert.
Tickets for the festival, which has the collaboration of EITB, will go on sale on May 21 at 11:30 on the festival website.
