Coffee grounds for potted flowers. What substances do coffee grounds contain?
Pot grounds are a well-known solution among gardeners for improving the condition of plants. Coffee grounds are a natural waste that is great as fertilizer. They include, among others:
- phosphorus,
- copper,
- potassium,
- nitrogen.
Importantly, the grounds are acidic, so they are suitable primarily for plants that like slightly acidic soil, e.g. ferns or anthuriums. It is worth remembering that they cannot be used as a preparation for changing the soil reaction. They can only help maintain this state.
If you want to apply the grounds to potted plants, remember to mix them with the soil from the pot. Leaving them simply scattered on the surface may cause them to become moldy. They will therefore lose their values and may additionally contribute to the deterioration of the plants. You can also use them in another way, namely by making liquid conditioner. Enough pour about half a liter of water over a tablespoon of grounds. Another way to use coffee grounds is to pour them into the bottom of the pot in an amount of about one teaspoon before adding the soil. This treatment will make the soil more aerated.
Can you use coffee grounds in the garden?
If you ask a gardener if it is possible to use it, you will certainly receive an affirmative answer. One of the simplest solutions is to use them as compost. Then they will not only add some nutrients, but also improve the consistency of the soil (it will not become acidic because we do not use enough grounds that could lead to acidification of the soil on this scale).
Coffee grounds in the garden can also be used in the same way as in pots, i.e. added to the soil. Here too, they should be mixed with the layer of soil around the plant. They can also be used to make liquid for watering plants. However, the proportions will be different here, because it will be approx. three tablespoons of coffee grounds per approx. 5 liters of water. This mixture should stand at least overnight. There is no need to strain it, in fact it is worth mixing it and watering the plants. Of course, you can use coffee grounds in a similar way for plants that we keep on balconies.
Will coffee grounds be effective against snails?
Unfortunately, snails are a nuisance in many gardens. They can destroy plants very effectively. But can coffee grounds for snails help? It turns out that it is the fight against these pests. Not only is the soil fertilized, but these creatures do not like the strong smell of coffee and the caffeine it contains, which is toxic to them. Therefore, using coffee as a fertilizer or as a preparation for watering plants will not only nourish the garden, but also help get rid of unwanted pests.
