Sick leave came under the microscope of the Social Insurance Institution. Two types of inspections have been ongoing since the beginning, the results of which were shared by the regional spokesman for the Pomeranian Voivodeship. What to watch out for?

The inspections carried out by the Social Insurance Institution check two things. As we can read on the website, one of them concerns making sure that sick leave is used as intended and that temporary incapacity for work is assessed correctly, and also that the patient does not perform paid work in the meantime. During the inspection, ZUS primarily checks whether the person is on sick leave uses them according to the doctor’s recommendations and for their intended purpose, and does not treat it as a vacation or an opportunity to deal with one’s affairs. The idea is to act while on sick leave in a way that will enable us to recover as quickly as possible, and therefore also to work. This means that we can perform everyday activities and those that will improve our health (e.g. visiting a doctor or a pharmacy). It is also checked whether people staying on L4 are still unable to work. Doubts are raised primarily, but not only, by the dismissal of people who have previously committed irregularities. Attention is also drawn to those whose period of incapacity for work is suspiciously long, considering the illness of the patient, or when it is extended by successive, different doctors, often also due to various, new ailments.
