The Warsaw prosecutor’s office discontinued the proceedings in the case of Jan Pietrzak, who “joked” about ready-made “immigrant barracks in Auschwitz” on Republika TV. He will not be punished, the decision is final.

– I have a cruel joke with these immigrants that they count on Poles being prepared because we have barracks. We have barracks for immigrants: in Auschwitz, Majdanek, Treblinka, Stutthof. We have a lot of barracks built here by the Germans. And there we will detain (…) these immigrants, illegally pushed to us by the Germans, because people who escape to a better world are not illegal – these were the scandalous words spoken on Telewizja Republika in December 2023. The case was immediately taken up by the Minister of Justice, Adam Bodnar.

Jan Pietrzak will not answer for a “joke” about immigrants

Bodnar asked national prosecutor Dariusz Barski to look into the statement. The proceedings have started. Pietrzak was accused of publicly insulting a group of people because of their national and ethnic affiliation, and the case was investigated by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw. Viewers were also outraged by Pietrzak’s statement. The National Broadcasting Council received 130 complaints about the “joke”.

Almost half a year after the broadcast of the famous material on TV Republika, the Wirtualne Media portal asked for an update on the investigation. – The proceedings in question were completed in March this year. issuing a decision to discontinue the investigation due to the lack of indications of a prohibited act – announced prosecutor Szymon Banna.

“The proceedings have been discontinued”

– The analysis of the evidence collected in the case showed that Jan P. spoke about current issues regarding the situation in Poland. The interviewee presented his opinion on politics throughout the interview. Jan P.’s statements during the interview on December 31, 2023 did not contain any unlawful threats or incitement to commit crimes to the detriment of anyone. The decision is final, he added.

After Pietrzak’s statement, advertisers began to withdraw from Telewizja Republika. The case was widely commented on in the media. The speaker included reporter Mariusz Szczygie³, who reacted to the words of one of Pietrzak’s defenders, who emphasized that the satirist had not hurt anyone. “Well, dear lady, he hurt us as a community. Because he instills in us unacceptable comparisons. This is a dangerous force. Violence begins with words,” he wrote on Instagram.
