The courier asks you for this thing in a text message? A red light should come on for you. It’s the “spaghetti method”

The Internet is full of scammers. They use phishing and impersonate well-known institutions, companies or people in order to extort money. For some time now, the “Poczta Polska” scam has become very popular. If you are waiting for the courier, don’t be fooled.

Phishing aims to infect a computer or phone with malware or force someone to take specific actions, e.g. providing personal data or bank account credentials. Scammers send fake emails, social media messages or text messages. They have been using a new tactic for several months and have been trying to fool Poles by pretending to be Poczta Polska.

SMS from Poczta Polska about the shipment. Be careful, it may be a scam

Nowadays, a lot of people do things online, so thieves decided to take advantage of it. When placing an online order, in addition to your name, surname and residential address, we must also provide your e-mail address and telephone number. Regardless of what form of delivery you choose, Poczta Polska or the courier company must be able to contact you.

So we are eagerly waiting for the news that the parcel is on its way. That’s where scammers come in. They send false text messages that the parcel has been detained because you need to provide information, e.g. house or apartment number. They ask you to update your information and click on a special link so that they can resend your shipment. If you do this, you will be redirected to a phishing site.

What is courier fraud? This is an attempt to extort data and money

After completing the data, you may receive information about the need to pay additional compensation for the courier’s failure to deliver the parcel the first time. You must then provide the card number and its expiration date. This way, the fraudster gains access to your bank account. You may wonder how it is possible for a thief to know that you are waiting for a parcel? In fact, it’s just a coincidence. – Statistics say that every time a fraudster will find someone who is waiting for a parcel. This is the “spaghetti plate method”, if you throw it against the wall, something will stick. There will always be a person in such a situation to whom the cybercriminal’s message will refer – Iwona Prószyńska from CERT Polska. If you feel like it, vote in our poll below.
