Thousands of protesters in the streets before Eurovision: “You have blood on your hands.” Greta Thunberg in the crowd

Before the second Eurovision semi-final, a crowd of protesters gathered on the streets of Malmo. The demonstrators are against Israel’s participation in the competition due to the situation in the Gaza Strip. Greta Thunberg joined thousands of people with Palestinian flags.

The second semi-final of 2024 will take place on May 9. We will see, among others, the Israeli national teams on stage, which is met with opposition all over the world. Since the beginning of the state’s invasion of Palestine, approximately 35,000 Palestinians have died. The war is a response to a Hamas terrorist attack last year that killed 1,139 civilians. Israel has been invading the Gaza Strip for half a year and is attacking not only strategic targets, but also refugee camps, hospitals and residential houses.

Protests before Eurovision. Crowds took to the streets of Malmo

The dramatic situation of the Pakistanis did not influence the decision of the Eurovision organizers about Israel’s participation in the competition. Fans of the show accuse them of double standards. When Russia invaded Ukraine, other actions were taken – the Russians were not allowed on the Eurovision stage, and the event showed huge support for the attacked Ukrainians. This time, however, the official position of the competition organizers was clear. Participants were forbidden to bring Palestinian flags into the concert hall and manifest their views.

Due to Israel’s performance in the second Eurovision semi-final, thousands of protesters appeared on the streets of Malmo, where the competition is held. Footage of crowds holding Palestinian flags can be found online. They include slogans such as: “shame on you, Eurovision” and accusations: “you have blood on your hands.” As we read on The Washington Post website, we are witnessing the most politically tense edition of the competition in its 68-year history.

Metal barriers and large concrete blocks were erected around the Malmo Arena, where Eurovision takes place. The facility is guarded by the police, and guests are checked with a metal detector before entering. Only small bags can be brought into the rooms. Local services estimate that about five thousand people took part in the demonstration.
