Begins! Flags are to appear in stores. It will be known which product from which country

When shopping, many people pay attention to where products come from. Especially in recent years, we have been making sure to buy primarily those produced or bred in Poland. However, we are not always able to see where a given thing comes from. This is about to change.

Products that we can buy in stores must have a marking related to their country of origin. This is an obligation that rests with the owners. Mostly there is no problem with this, but there are some situations where it is really difficult to see this information. Especially when it comes to vegetables and fruits. These are arranged in boxes with the country of origin written on the side – sometimes not on the one we see when shopping. It is difficult to lift a box loaded with apples or potatoes. Yes, the country of origin can also be found on the price list, but there are also problems here. Price lists are often not placed above a given product or there are so many of them that it is simply difficult to find the right one. For these reasons, the government has started working on clearer country of origin labeling. Flags should wave in front of customers’ eyes.

New product markings: flags should wave in front of customers’ eyes

New country of origin markings on products using a flag is a pre-election promise of the Civic Coalition. Work is currently underway to introduce this obligation. This was recently announced by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Michał Kołodziejczak.

Currently, EU regulations specify the obligation to indicate the country of origin for fresh fruit and vegetables. National regulations envisage extending this obligation to include displaying the flag of the country of origin of fresh fruit and vegetables

New product designations. More flags than during a national holiday?

It is worth noting that – although we have access to products from various countries in stores – the vast majority of them come from Poland. Specific data are provided in the cited publication. “Poland is a leading producer of food, including primarily fruit, meat (poultry, pork), and dairy products. Polish food products are sold primarily on the domestic market and are the vast majority on store shelves.”

According to data from the Polish Organization of Trade and Distribution, the share in sales of products of Polish origin in large-format stores in relation to e.g. meat is over 96 percent, meat products are 98 percent, milk and dairy products are 97 percent, eggs are 97 percent. , vegetables and fruit is 76 percent.

So it seems that when the work on the new markings is completed, each visit to the store will arouse truly patriotic feelings in us. So many white and red flags in one place – not only during national holiday celebrations – will make many customers proud.
