This year’s Eurovision Song Contest has only just begun, but it is already generating huge emotions. Not only representatives of European countries are fighting for victory, but also a well-known team from Australia, which causes considerable consternation among many viewers. Why do musicians from overseas participate in the event?

has been organized since 1956. During it, representatives of almost all European countries, but not only them, perform on stage. Australia has also been taking an active part in the event for less than a decade, which is still a big surprise to many. However, the reasons are not as complicated as many might assume.

Why is Australia in Eurovision? This is due to the events of a decade ago

It is no secret that each episode arouses great emotions, and its broadcasts attract hundreds of thousands of viewers from all over the world who support their favorites with bated breath. Eurovision also won the hearts of Australians and was broadcast live on their television in 1983. How did it happen that, more than three decades later, their representatives also took part in the competition?

In 2014, during the break during the second semi-final, the famous Australian singer Jessica Mauboy appeared on stage as a guest. The viewers liked it, as evidenced by, among others, viewership results, which quickly skyrocketed. The European Broadcasting Union saw this as a great way to further promote the event and decided to invite a country from overseas to send a representative. Thus, a year later, during the 60th edition of Eurovision, Guy Sebastian with “Tonight Again” fought for victory and in the final classification he took 5th place.

After Australia’s first success at Eurovision, the EUN agreed to allow the country to remain on the list of participants in the competition until 2023. Some people did not like this idea because they claimed that it threatened the “identity of the competition”, while others saw it as simply a friendly gesture. However, the question was whether after the previously agreed deadline the contract would be extended or the cooperation would end. It is already known that the second option was chosen.

The first semi-final of the 68th edition of the event took place on May 7, 2024, in which the country from across the ocean is represented by the Electric Fields team. – I hope that our performance will help inspire a group of young Aboriginal people in Australia – vocalist Zaachariah Fielding in an interview with the Guardian magazine, emphasizing that the song he will sing on stage with Michael Ross will be in an indigenous Australian language. – We are introducing one of Australia’s oldest languages ​​to the Eurovision stage. This is already a beautiful victory – she added proudly. It is worth mentioning that Australia is not the only country that does not belong to the European Union but still takes part in the competition.
