In order to extort money or data from us, fraudsters often impersonate other portals or institutions, including banks or offices. For some time now, the “Border Guard” scam has become popular again. Criminals call and pretend to be officers. What to do?

Criminals do not sleep and are constantly using new methods to extort money or confidential data from us. He writes about the fraudsters’ new method. BIK also warns in its alerts. However, this is not the first time, because this method was used already in 2023. What does “the Border Guard” mean?

Beware of calls from the Border Guard. They’re scammers

Fraudsters call impersonating other numbers and pretending to be the “Border Guard”. After receiving it, you can hear a recorded message saying that “a parcel” addressed to the victim’s address and details “containing illegal substances” was stopped at the border. What’s more, an “arrest warrant” was issued for the victim. Finally, the fraudsters ask the victim to press button 1, which will allow them to connect with a Border Guard officer, the “in-charge officer”.

These calls are a scam. If you receive such a call, you can safely hang up

After connecting with the “officer”, he will probably want to extract your data from you or extort money, for example by encouraging you to install an application that gives remote access to the device and then take over your login details to the bank’s website or install spyware.

Scammers call not only from unknown numbers. What to do?

Many modern smartphones have a built-in filter, thanks to which a message appears on the device screen that an incoming call is spam. In such situations, it is best not to answer. However, fraudsters sometimes impersonate well-known institutions, which means that the number of e.g. an institution or office may be displayed on the phone screen.

If you receive a call from a known number and you suspect that the caller is not who they say they are, hang up and do not call back.
