To reach the final of the Eurovision Song Contest, you have to compete. Or at least, most countries. Spain has the privilege of not having to compete in the semifinals as well as five other countries—the members of the Big Five, which are, in addition to Spain, France, Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom, and in 2024 also Swedenas the host country of the festival—, but the rest of the participants have to go through one of the two semifinals to be chosen and reach the grand finalwhich takes place in Malmö on Saturday, May 11.
In the first Eurovision semi-finalwhich was held this Tuesday, May 7, there were 15 countries vying for their place in the grand final, including Australia, one of the countries that always generates certain doubts: Why is a country located not only on another continent, but also at the antipodes, participating in this European contest? The truth is that Australia does not participate as a static country and definitive member of the festival, although it may be in the future, if an agreement is reached. For now, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has authorized its participation in the 2024 festival.
Precisely Australia will be one of those absent in the final of Eurovision 2024, after losing in this first semi-final. The one who will fight again for the crystal microphone will be Luxembourg, which returns to the grand final of the competition after 30 years of absence.
