is one of the largest cyclical music events in the world. Each year, the competition is organized by a city designated by the public broadcaster of the previous winner’s country. The process is supervised by the European Broadcasting Union, but the largest part of the costs associated with organizing this huge undertaking falls on the city’s shoulders.
Eurovision 2024. How much does it cost to organize the competition?
In 2024, Eurowijza will take place in Malmo, Sweden. Interestingly, it has been exactly 50 years since the winning performance of ABBA, which performed the song “Waterloo” during the 19th edition of the competition. This time, 37 countries will take part in the competition, and the finals will start on May 7. This year’s winner will be announced four days later.
The host of the competition is financially supported by the EBU and the public broadcaster, which this year is SVT. According to eurovoix.com, the authorities of Malmo revealed that they plan to spend EUR 2.5 million on organizing Eurovision. It’s almost PLN 11 million.
People spend a lot of money on Eurovision. Azerbaijan is the record holder
However, the expense is clearly worth it. The chairwoman of the Malmo city council, Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh, talked about calculations from 10 years ago in an interview for Svergies Radio. According to Interia, they showed that the income from tourism after the organization of Eurovision amounted to approximately 185 million Swedish crowns, or almost PLN 67 million.
The last time Swedes organized Eurovision was in 2016, when they spent five million euros on the event, although they planned to invest twice as much. According to the WP portal, in 2014 Denmark invested as much as EUR 44.8 million, i.e. approximately PLN 200 million, to organize the competition. However, the record holder is Azerbaijan, which allocated EUR 60 million for the competition in 2012. In order for the event to be held there, a new arena had to be built, which consumed most of the money.
