Not only was the girl unable to utter a word, she was moving on all fours. Witnesses to this event immediately alerted the services. They tried to ask her questions, but to no avail. They believed the child was about 6-7 years old, but in fact she was 12 years old. The girl’s behavior showed that she had never been taught human speech before. As described by a British daily, 12-year-old Diana was making noises that resembled a dog barking.

Foreign media then wrote about the “Mowgli girl”, referring to Rudyard Kipling’s famous novel about a boy raised in the jungle by wild animals. Diana was supposed to make sounds such as: howling and moving around the street on all fours, “like a frightened animal.”

The huddled, exhausted and starving 12-year-old was transported to the hospital in Orel. An investigation was immediately initiated into her case, and it was quickly established that the child’s mother was a 38-year-old woman of Chechen origin named Madina. The 12-year-old’s father had been dead for about a year. The hospital also found that the girl is much older than her appearance suggests. The child has not mastered speech skills at all.

Moreover, she didn’t know what a knife and fork were for. She served food with her hands. Doctors also noticed that the girl was starved and malnourished and greedily ate food. She couldn’t chew it, she only took bites and swallowed them whole. She also didn’t want to sleep on the bed, so she was allowed to sleep on a mattress on the floor. Further tests showed that 12-year-old Diana was raised in complete captivity, had no contact with the outside world, and was not socialized with other children. Further atrocities that her own mother subjected her to came to light. Madina, 38, was addicted to alcohol. Local institutions dealing with residents’ family matters were held legally responsible in the first place. Diana’s mother heard the charges and was arrested. The woman tried to defend herself. She claimed that the allegations of pimping her own child were “nonsense”. In addition, she argued that her daughter “was sick” (pointing to intellectual disability) and that she “couldn’t do anything about it.”

Interestingly, these allegations were also denied by the woman’s neighbors. It turned out that they knew about the existence of the imprisoned and tortured girl. However, doctors found that any damage to the girl’s mental and physical health was due to the way she had been treated over the years. Although the girl was diagnosed with a disability, it cannot be ruled out that she was born as a completely healthy baby.

Unfortunately, history knows more cases of adult children who, due to the gross negligence of their caregivers, have experienced a similar fate and will always need care. They grew up in complete social isolation, cut off from direct contact with the spoken language, which resulted in their psychophysical development being disturbed.
