“Grandma thought Robert De Niro was writing to her on Messanger. He was showering her with sexy photos”

Gina Morgan, 76, from the UK almost fell for an online scam. The senior was convinced that she was talking to Robert De Niro. When she showed the messages to her granddaughter, the sad truth came to light.

Why would Robert De Niro contact a random pensioner from the UK? Although it’s hard to find any reasonable reason, 76-year-old Gina Morgan truly believed she was talking to a Hollywood star. Her story was told by her granddaughter on TikTok.

He sent sexy photos and said he would visit her

A person impersonating Robert De Niro contacted the senior via Messanger. In private messages, she offered the 76-year-old fan access to exclusive content available only to a handful of fans. Online Robert De Niro allegedly promised that he would send the woman voice messages, call her and even visit her in person. And all this for £400.

– When my grandmother showed me these messages, I couldn’t stop laughing – said her granddaughter. She added that fortunately, the 76-year-old was careful and did not provide the fraudster with any personal information. The author of the recording admitted that it was not easy for her to explain to her grandmother that it was not a Hollywood star who was behind the news. “Let me show you a photo of him. He looks sexy. I had a good time talking to him,” the senior argued. Eventually, her granddaughter explained to her step by step how online fraud works.

The police warn against internet fraud

As we read on the Police website, “cybercriminals use appropriately formulated phrases or create more extensive and complex plots in order to gain trust. Fraudsters take advantage of gullibility, willingness to help others, the desire to get rich quickly, haste, or curiosity. Remember that the switch of logical thinking and vigilance “Most often it’s greed.” The services emphasize that Internet users should take care of their own safety by applying the following security rules:

1. Use an antivirus program that is regularly updated to provide effective protection against many different online threats (viruses, worms, Trojans, etc.).

2. Do not open links or attachments in questionable emails, as they may contain malicious software or link you to false addresses used to extort money or steal your identity.

3. Make all bank payments using the https protocol (marked with a padlock icon), which ensures security of data transmission. It is also worth displaying a certificate confirming secure data transmission, because more sophisticated criminals can use the https protocol, but do not have a security certificate.
