Daniel Olbrychski and Anouk Aimée met during the Cannes festival. He had just starred in Claude Lelouch’s film “One and the Other”, and she was one of the director’s greatest muses. The French actress saw Olbrychski for the first time in the company of his wife Zuzanna. In one of her books, she admitted that she was perfectly aware that another woman was looking at her husband. “To avoid this embarrassing situation, I went to dance with Skolimowski, which Daniel, as usual, immediately made a fuss about, distracting attention from Aimée, who was staring at him,” recalled Łapicka.
The star of French cinema lost her head for the Polish actor
The actress didn’t wait long to seduce Olbrychski. She persuaded Claude Lelouch to organize a dinner with the actor. Although the infatuated Frenchwoman failed to keep Olbrychski by her side, he returned to France after a few months – this time without a wife who could stand in the way of their fiery romance. Due to martial law declared at that time, Łapicka had to stay at home with her child. However, she received scraps of information about her husband’s foreign activities. The Security Service agents were also interested in them and one day they knocked on her door with a passport, hoping that Łapicka would persuade the actor to return to the country. They hoped that he would have valuable information about Poles living abroad.
Anouk Aimée, in turn, hoped that Olbrychski would leave his wife and his current life for her. For him, she was even ready to move to Poland, but Lelouch was to quickly cool down her enthusiasm: “Lelouch told Anouk: ‘You have nothing to fight for, because there are two things you can’t fight for. One is Zuzia, the other is Poland and Solidarity.’ I don’t know which love was more important, I think that Daniel’s Poland survived, and I didn’t necessarily, because our marriage eventually fell apart anyway,” Zuzanna Łapicka later reported. Olbrychski separated from his second wife in 1989. A dozen or so years later, he got involved with Krystyna Demska, a manager and theater expert.
