Leopold Bilski pushed a heavy wicket. In the gray light of the twilight, the house looming deep in the garden looked ominous. Its modern geometric gate seemed to lose its contours and become denaturalized. The prosecutor walked onto a path paved with white pebbles. Crunch, crunch, crunch under the soles of his military boots, and a black bird jumped out of the tree growing right next to it. After a while he reached the panoramic window. The curtain was open. Numerous overhead and floor lights were on. Laura Konarska stood in the middle. In a powder-colored exercise set revealing her hard stomach. She looked straight at the phone placed on a tripod. There was a slight smile on her lips. Her face was relaxed and rested. She didn’t look like someone who had recently lost her husband. Bilski looked at her for a moment, various thoughts swirling in his head. The day after receiving information that her husband was dead, Laura Konarska conducted live training. In the recording, she acted as if nothing had happened. Does this indicate a lack of empathy or denial? Everyone reacts differently to traumatic events. Leopold Bilski knew this perfectly well.

He was still staring at the Instagrammer’s figure. Smile, relaxed face. But something was wrong. It took him a moment to realize that the woman hadn’t moved an iota all this time. Her eyes stared blankly at the phone screen. The eyelids never lowered to wet the eyeball. Leopold Bilski approached the terrace door and stretched out his hand. He knocked on the window, but Laura Konarska didn’t even move. She still stood motionless like a frozen porcelain doll. Suddenly something moved in the corner. The prosecutor knitted his eyebrows, trying to see what it was. The gray coating covering the corner of the wall began to pulsate. It’s getting livelier and stronger, as if something wanted to get out from under it. After a while, a black leg appeared, and another, and a spider emerged from under its shell. Black and large, with shiny short hairs. He began to pace the floor, getting closer to Laura. Bilski started knocking on the window again, harder and louder, but the woman did not respond. Finally, the bird reached her leg and started climbing up it. At that moment, the prosecutor felt that something was climbing over him. He looked down and his trouser-clad legs were covered in large spiders that were pushing upwards.

Bilski jumped out of bed screaming. The dream was so realistic that he still wanted to shake the arachnids off his feet. He made a sound of disgust, and after a while he started laughing, even though the feeling of something coming over him didn’t want to go away for a long time. He went to the bathroom and jumped into the cold shower, washing away the sweat. After a minute, he was putting on his clothes and fixing his hair. Staring at his reflection, he ran his thumb over his neck, which had been red with an allergic reaction a few weeks ago. Laura Konarska didn’t have a tarantula – the police had already checked it, but Leopold still couldn’t shake the feeling that Konarski’s wife was hiding something.

He glanced at his watch. He should be leaving now. Anna had long since rushed to the morning hearing. Bilski, on the other hand, made an appointment with Blanka Winiarska, who called him in the evening. He was very curious what the woman wanted to tell him. Her voice sounded serious on the phone. It was devoid of the vibrant tone she had given him in the hairdressing salon. Something had changed, Bilski just didn’t know what yet.

A moment later he left the house and after fifteen minutes he was at the agreed place. The Santa Cafe, located in a quiet courtyard at Monciak Street, was very popular

atmospheric. White-painted brick wall, old tables, antique armchairs, tasteful accessories, atmospheric music and cozy lighting. It was obvious that someone had put their whole heart into this place. Leopold Bilski ordered black coffee and New York cheesecake. Blanka Winiarska was already ten minutes late, but the prosecutor waited patiently. He drank his coffee with pleasure; it was hot and aromatic. Exactly the way he liked it. He just received a message from Kita. The DNA results came back from the condom material; the sperm found in it came from Błażej Konarski. The DNA of the woman with whom he had sex was also extracted. Unfortunately, it was not found in the base, but Leopold had already prepared for it. There was little chance that the deceased had sex that day with someone who had a previous conviction. Either way, he didn’t expect that the case of Błażej Konarski’s death would go so far. That’s why he loved this job. For the secrets that were systematically revealed to him. He knew that the actions he took were often beyond his authority. Maybe he should have become a policeman or detective? Fortunately, Spider and Kita turned a blind eye to the fact that he was encroaching on their competences. They were a harmonious trio. And that’s probably why they managed to solve most of the cases. There were very few unchecked numbers in their shared drawer.

Finally, Blanka Winiarska stood in the doorway of the glass veranda. She wore light faux fur and white knee-high boots. Almost half of her face was covered by large designer sunglasses, which she did not take off once she took the seat opposite Bilski.

“I’m glad you called,” the prosecutor began. – I take it there’s something you haven’t told me before? – Blanka nodded affirmatively. – So I’m listening.

The woman took a breath and held it in her lungs for a moment.

– Surely, the prosecutor managed to find out how Błażej made money? – She looked around.

Leopold blinked.

– I heard this and that. But I don’t know if we’re thinking the same thing.

– He tilted his head.

Blanca snorted.

– Full diplomacy, Mr. Prosecutor – she said.

– Mrs. Blanko, please from the beginning. This is probably the best thing to do

– Bilski argued.

The woman puffed out her cheeks and let out a sigh.

– To put it simply, Błażej was involved in stealing cars from Berlin. He imported them to Poland on request, someone else re-registered them, and someone else acted as an intermediary. I don’t know how it worked exactly.

– Where did you get this information?

“Mr. Prosecutor,” Blanka replied, drawing out the vowels with pity. – You know, I won’t say, let’s leave it as a guess, okay? – She took a sip of the water placed on the table by the waitress. – But please keep listening, because maybe this is important.

– I listen attentively.

– A few years ago, I don’t know exactly, because it was before I started dating Klaudiusz, a baby-faced guy, Andrzej Smyk, worked with Błażej. Claudius once told me about it when he was drunk and now I remembered it. And this Andrzej committed suicide.

– Hmm. – Leopold’s eyebrows went up as he frowned in surprise. – And you think it has something to do with the case because…?

– Because Claudius said that the suicide was suspicious and that Andrzej must have offended someone. Klaudio then said something that stuck in my memory: “Once you get into something like this, you won’t get away easily.” She made a significant face.

– Do you think Claudius feared for his life then?

– That was the sound back then.

– When did you hear this story?

– I don’t know, it’s been a long time.

– Did Claudius say anything else afterwards that would show that he was afraid? Or maybe something that would indicate that Błażej wanted to withdraw from this business and risk punishment? Blanka shook her head and adjusted her glasses.

– I don’t know anything else. Claudius never told me any details or names. Generally, it is very discreet. He must have really had a crisis then to appear with this story. I don’t even know if he remembers telling me that. We never returned to this topic.

– Okay, we’ll look into it. Thank you for sharing this with me. – Someone opened the door and cold air rushed in. – I have one more question, if I may.

– Yes?

– Does Claudius have a spider?

– Spider?

– A large spider. Birdman. One in a terrarium.

– Luckily for him, he doesn’t grow anything like that. He certainly wouldn’t make anyone laugh at that, Blanka laughed.

Leopold smiled too and extended his hand towards her.

– I can? – He carefully removed the glasses from the woman’s face. There was an almost black mark from the impact around her eye. – Where did you get it?

“I fell over,” Blanka replied firmly.

– I’m wondering… – Bilski looked closely at Winiarska.

– Did you come here today to take revenge? – An almost imperceptible grimace of contempt appeared on Blanka’s lips.

– Is it because you are worried about him? – He narrowed his eyes.

– Women are stupid, aren’t they? But love, contrary to appearances, is not

it happens so often. – She shrugged and got up from the table.

Bilski also stood up and helped her put on her silver cloak.

– The last question. Where do they hide the cars before they get into the hands of customers?

Winiarska spread her hands.

– Again, the prosecutor would like me to give him everything on a plate – she laughed. I’ve already told you that when you take shortcuts, you miss a lot of details. Her voice vibrated coquettishly again.

She put her glasses back on her nose and walked out of the cafe, her hips swaying softly.
