Lighting a bonfire on your own plot or garden? Nothing tastes better than a sausage roasted over a fire. Many people are still convinced that there are no restrictions or rules on their own property. Nothing could be further from the truth. Failure to comply with the regulations may result in a fine.
Is it possible to light a bonfire on the plot? The regulations are clear
There is no prohibition stating that you cannot light a bonfire on your own property for recreational purposes. However, in accordance with the Minister of the Interior and Administration on fire protection of buildings, other structures and areas need strictly defined regulations. Therefore, you must not light a fire:
- if lighting a fire or pouring hot ash may contribute to the ignition of flammable materials,
- at a distance of less than 4 m from the border of the neighboring plot,
- at a distance of less than 10 m from the threshing site and places where flammable agricultural products occur,
- in forests and mid-forest areas, in meadows and peat bogs, as well as within 100 m from the forest border.

We should only burn properly prepared firewood in a bonfire. Do not burn garden waste as it may produce too much smoke. The issue of smoke is regulated by the law, according to which “one should refrain from any activities that would disturb the use of neighboring properties beyond the average level resulting from the socio-economic purpose of the property and local relations.” Therefore, if smoke enters the street and reduces drivers’ visibility or threatens their safety, We can expect police or city guard intervention and a fine of up to PLN 500.
