Two “Rebel Moon” films are just the beginning? Snyder talks about “part 4 to 6”

Zack Snyder, director of films such as “300” and “Watchmen”, never ceases to surprise. In the latest interview with “Radio Times” he revealed his ambitious plans for the “Rebel Moon” series.

Snyder, who initially presented the project as an adult film in the style of “Star Wars”, hopes to make as many as six films within this cosmic universe. The first two films – “Child of Fire” and “The Woundmaker” – were shot simultaneously as one film in 2022, but according to the creators, there was so much footage that they decided to divide it into two parts. Both productions gained a lot of interest on Netflix, despite very mixed reviews.

“Inflicting Wounds”, a continuation of the adventures of Kora (played by Sofia Boutella) who fights against the tyrannical Motherworld, debuted in selected theaters in the US, and from April 19 is also available on Netflix. The film also stars Ray Fisher, Anthony Hopkins, Ed Skrein and Michael Huisman aroused the interest of viewers, although it was met with “not very favorable reviews from critics.

Snyder does not hide his passion for the “Rebel Moon” project, planning to develop it not only in the form of subsequent films, but also through a comic book, a short animation and a video game. This commitment translates into the development of the brand, which, despite some difficulties in reception, is gaining its audience. The director expressed hope that if “The Woundmaker” is well received, Netflix will consider greenlighting another sequel.

Additionally, “R-rated” director’s cuts of both parts are scheduled to be released this summer. Snyder promises that they will be crazier than the cinematic versions, focusing on expanding the story and character development. Despite some critics’ skepticism about the future of the franchise, especially given the mixed reactions to the first films and the high production costs, Snyder is confident that his vision for four or even six films makes sense.

The idea of as many as six films may seem bold, especially since “Rebel Moon” has not yet reached the viewership level of hits such as “Red Notice”, but is still popular compared to other productions. As of now, “Rebel Moon” has amassed around 80-90 million views, which Snyder says is better than the “Barbie” movie’s results.

Uncertainty about the future of “Rebel Moon” remains, but Snyder’s enthusiasm and commitment to developing this universe indicate that it may continue to gain in importance, especially if fans support his vision for further productions. Whether Snyder can continue his space opera on the scale he has planned will depend on many factors, including audience reaction to the latest releases and Netflix’s decision to continue financing the project.
