In October 2023, the Association of Financial Enterprises in Poland and the Institute of Economic Development of the Warsaw School of Economics are holding our savings. As much as 55.1 percent Poles who took part in the survey admitted that they kept their savings “in their socks”, i.e. in cash. 39.5 percent chooses deposits, 8.4 percent in turn, it chose treasury bonds. Keeping our savings in cash does not protect them against inflation, but we still prefer to have some money on hand. However, we forget about the risk posed by burglars.
Keeping cash at home and thieves. How to protect yourself against losing valuable things? Don’t keep them where they’ll look right away
who broke into our house, he doesn’t have time to search it thoroughly. He has a few minutes to search the apartment, so he acts in a hurry. He takes whatever he finds “at hand”, especially when he enters an open apartment, such as phones, tablets, computers. In our absence, he searches the house for valuables, cash and jewelry, plunders the rooms and throws the contents of the furniture on the floor. He looks mainly at places where we usually hide valuable things. Where are they looking for money?

Where are thieves looking for money? Never hide valuable things there
A wardrobe, a chest of drawers, a bookshelf or a linen closet are the places they visit most often. There is a reason for this, because this is where Poles tend to hide valuable things, including jewelry and cash. A thief will search even a seemingly unobvious place because he knows our custom. Some people hide coins and valuables in a basket of dirty laundry, in a suitcase kept at the top of the closet or under a sliding table top. This is also where burglars usually go. Even the mattress won’t escape them. Where not to keep cash or valuables?
- shelves with books and CDs,
- in the laundry basket,
- in the clothes closet and chest of drawers,
- in the kitchen cabinet, e.g. in coffee and tea cans,
- under the mattress and in a container under the bed,
- behind the frame of pictures and mirrors,
- in a drawer or shelf locked with a key,
- in a children’s room, e.g. between toys.
– Hiding valuables, you have to think like a thief. Where would I look if I wanted to rob myself? Let’s not choose these places. We even advise not to hide high-value items in “secret” places that thieves know very well anyway, emphasizes Deputy Commissioner Adam Dembiński from the Police Headquarters in Łódź in an interview. The police advise to store valuable things in a bank safe deposit box, in a good safe hidden somewhere in the house or in a special safe.
