“Summer this year undoubtedly began on April 5, when the premiere of the viral song ‘Unless you’re with yourself’ by the band Modelki took place. The music video quickly climbed to number 1 on YouTube’s Na Czasie Card, overtaking, among others, Kizo, and since then doesn’t leave it. What’s more, a remix of the same song comes in second place. A few days later, the song became the most listened to song in Poland on Spotify,” we read in the press release.
Moreover, the girls from the band Modelki take first place on OLiS in the “singles in stream” category, and they won a gold album just 10 days after the single’s premiere. In turn, there are no songs on the largest commercial radio stations for young adults. The latest internet hit is a good example of how you can create a hit without the support of traditional media and break out thanks to TikTok. However, this is due to the fact that the song will most likely not reach many people over 35 years of age, for whom the source of knowledge about new music is still largely the radio.
Two members of the Models have had success in talent shows and more
There is no information about the band on Wikipedia. There have also been few press articles published so far. To learn more about Models, you can go to the sources most often used by young people today, i.e. social media. Even before the premiere of the first music video, the official Modelek channel posted a video showing the behind-the-scenes of the making of this debut video. This is a good way to reach the target group, but a person for whom this world is black magic or does not want to use “social” will not learn anything specific about the girls.
And after delving into the history of the artists, we learn that two of the three have experience with singing. And it’s quite big. We are talking about Aga Nowakowska and Ula Kowalska. The former was a participant in the 1st edition of “The Voice Kids”, of which she became a finalist. The latter took part in the 3rd edition of “Little Giants”, which she won together with Omena Mensah’s entire team. She was also a finalist of Junior Eurovision 2017, but was beaten by Alicja Rega by one point, and released the Polish anthem of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
It was also partly on Ula Kowalska’s initiative that the girl band was created. As we read on the website, the 21-year-old, during a meeting with rapper Anotny Esca and producer Vłodarski, came up with the idea of establishing a music group. The search for two singers then began, and Kowalska was soon joined by Aga Nowakowska and athlete Zuzanna Fijak.
They released their first single with the same title as the group’s name in July 2023. Next came the rap songs “On Me” and “Billboard Drop” recorded with Meggie, but they failed to make the cut. The girls used this time to build their reach on social media, especially on TikTok, where they can easily gain popularity thanks to casual communication and taking part in various challenges or .
In March, vlogs from the “Model House” series began to appear on social media. And a moment later, a fragment of the song “Unless you’re on your way” appeared on TikTok, which all users of the website could use before the official premiere of the single. This was enough to fuel curiosity about the “new summer” among young people. Many artists use the same procedure. .

And what exactly is the above-mentioned “summer”? According to the definition of the slang dictionary, it is “a piece of music created especially for summer or a song that is good to listen to during a warm period of the year, e.g. on the beach with friends.” It is worth mentioning that in Poland this term is mainly associated with music created by rap circles, although pop or club songs are described similarly abroad.
In our country, for several years now, there has been a huge demand for this type of simple songs that are supposed to put us in a good mood and do not carry a particularly sophisticated message. Increasingly, influencers are also becoming performers of such songs, and to the delight of their fans, they flood the Internet with songs that could be classified as contemporary hip-hop.
on the occasion of last year’s Spotify Wrapped summary, which was won by another “summer”, he clearly stated that “Poles are musical patriots” and this trend will strengthen. Therefore, it seems that the idea of creating a girl group of our times is not crazy. Especially with the enormous popularity of Young Leosia and her protégée Bambi, who also publish vlogs on YouTube revealing the behind-the-scenes of their lives.
However, I have the impression that nowadays adults are less and less able to keep up with what their children may be listening to. I grew up before the era of social media, when television programs promoted new stars. When I was in primary school, the Jonas Brothers were particularly promoted in Disney Channel films and series, and their members are still active today. There were so few TV channels back then that everyone who had cable had a chance to see this type of program. Thanks to this, my parents had at least a minimal idea who the stars I admired were.
In Poland, the Internet has its stars and the radio has its stars. Will the new girl group have a great career?
That’s why I think it’s not that there weren’t such stories in the past, but the times and the way of reaching the recipient have changed. And there is so much content on the Internet that many things that we are not the target audience of, we simply miss. However, Polish radio stations approach new music very carefully and often do not play songs that are very popular around the world (e.g. ) or dominate only in Polish streaming. According to data from the website, at the moment the only major radio that plays Modelek’s latest hit is VOX FM, a station associated with disco polo, which is not considered a youth radio station.
The models tried rap in their first three singles, but in their first hit they sing rather than rap, and considering the previous vocal achievements of the two members of the band, it would be better if they went in this direction. But do they have a chance to sign up for more than one season? This will be shown in the coming months, when the next two “summers” will be released. However, in the history of Polish music, no girl group has remained on the market for long, and their members have not had a solo career. Examples include the band De Su or the band Queens, formed in the mid-1900s, which included Patrycja Wódź, known from the first edition of “Idol”.
And although I am pleased with the emergence of young artists in recent years, I am not a fan of the dominant sound. It’s nice that it reaches many people and makes their summer evenings more pleasant, including mine, but I miss something fresh in the mainstream that would have a bigger message behind it. As an example, I can mention 23-year-old PinkPantheress from Great Britain, whose career also began on TikTok. Her inconspicuous melodies referring to the style of the 90s and 00s are pleasant to the ear, but lyrically she devotes a lot to loneliness. This resulted in, among others, the “BBC Sound of 2022” award and performances around the world, including in Poland. Last year she played her last concert on the fourth day of Open’er.
