‘Habitat’ is the most recent collection by the Bolivian designer Marión Macedo who exhibited dresses and accessories made from paper, video tapes and plasticsin creations that unite the art, fashion and the recyclingin addition to encouraging the daily use of these styles in the country.
The event took place in a neighborhood in the south of La Paz, where 15 dresses and outfits inspired by the concepts of water, fire and flora were shown, among others combined with bags or wallets made mainly of paper.
“This opens the door for people to take note and thanks to a catwalk they realize that (fashion) is something flexible and that they begin to realize that they can use (recycled materials)”Macedo told EFE.
For example, ‘water‘It was a long dress with a wide flare in which the paper was molded to resemble fabric and also represent the waves of rivers, lakes and seas.
While ‘pollution’ and ‘pollution’ They were created with tapes from old video cassettes, which were woven and whose shiny black sought to capture the phenomenon of air pollution.
‘Floral’ and ‘grove’ They showed the recovery process of nature after adverse events such as forest fires and were made with recycled tablecloths and paper.
Macedo said that the making of each dress or garment “It depends on the design and the material,” since some are yarn and in others the paper has to go through a process to acquire the characteristics of a fabric.
This is how you can make it “skirts, corsets, dresses, woven and paper interlacing, ‘biscuit lining’ tunics that are made from PET bottles,” the designer noted.
She also mentioned that each of these dresses can cost about 1,000 bolivianos (US$ 145), in which the highest value is focused on “the design and the hours (of) work” more than the materials themselves.
Likewise, Macedo explained that in the case of accessories it is sought that they are “available to the public” with creations that can cost between 150 to 200 bolivianos (US$ 22 and US$ 29).
The specialist emphasized that in fashion “there are no limits” and that the combination between recycling and style is feasible, so an example of this is that several entrepreneurs in Bolivia have begun to work with these materials.
“These ventures open the door to a circular economy, so people realize that it is not only the pleasure of recycling but that you can make a living from this, that is, you can have an income”he claimed.
Another aspect that the designer highlighted is that fashion is a form of “show personality” of the reason why the fact of using a piece of clothing with recyclable materials also implies expressing a “life philosophy”.
