One film, one actor – many roles. The record holder played as many as 24 characters

We all remember how Cezary ¯ak played the roles of two brothers in the cult “Ranczo”. In foreign cinema, such performances by actors also occurred… and even in more than two roles in one film.

Mike Myers – “Austin Powers”

Mike Myers in the “Austin Powers” film series played the main character, Austin Powers, and his antagonist, Dr. Evil, Myers and two other characters: Fat Bastard, a grotesquely obese Scottish villain, and Goldmember, an eccentric Dutch villain. Each character had a unique voice, gestures and distinctive features, which only added to the comedic effect of each scene.

Alec Guinness – “Nobility obliges”

Alec Guinness in “Nobility Obliges” from 1949 created one of the most impressive acting performances, playing as many as eight different characters from the D’Ascoyne family. In this film, Guinness portrayed various members of an aristocratic family, from a priest to a general and even a woman. His ability to subtly differentiate between characters who differed not only in character, but also in gender and social status deserves recognition.

Michael J. Fox – “Back to the Future II”

The actor played not only his iconic character Marty McFly, but also his children: Marty Jr. and Marlene McFly in the futuristic world of 2015. Fox showed his flexibility as an actor, changing characters and behaviors to adapt to the dynamic demands of the script, where different temporal threads weave together. His rendition of each character was both entertaining and technically impressive, considering the technological limitations of the time.

Eddie Murphy

His talent for transformation was first revealed in the 1988 comedy “A Prince in New York”, where he played four different people, including Prince Akeem. In “Fat and Thin” Murphy went even further, playing seven roles, including Professor Klump and his entire family. Each character was expressive, with a unique voice and mannerisms, which was possible thanks to the use of extensive makeup and special effects. However, these are not the only cases, because over the years he has also played various characters in the films “The Vampire in Brooklyn”, “Bowfinger’s Big Fuck” and “Norbit”.

Tom Hardy as the Kray brothers

In the film “Legend” (2015), he played both Kray brothers, Ronnie and Reggie. Hardy perfectly captured the subtle differences in their personalities, which allowed viewers to easily distinguish the characters despite their identical appearances. His role as Reggie was more balanced, while as Ronnie he presented a more unstable and aggressive character. The fight scene between them is the highlight of the film, demonstrating both Hardy’s acting talentsas well as modern film technologies.

James McAvoy as Kevin Wendell Crumb

James McAvoy played Kevin Wendell Crumb in the films “Split” and “Glass”, who has 24 different personalities. McAvoy moved with extraordinary skill between characters as diverse as nine-year-old Hedwig, the perfect Miss Patricia, and the mighty Beast. Each personality had its own character, mannerisms and way of speaking, which McAvoy portrayed with incredible precision. This role was not only an acting challenge, but also touched on the topic of dissociative disorders.
