A chemist bluntly talks about how often to change your towels. “It hits everything”

For many people, changing and washing towels is another, not very pleasant, household chore. However, it is worth doing it regularly. Unfortunately, many people still make a big mistake by doing it far too rarely. The chemist warns: “Moisture, dead skin and dirt cause bacteria to multiply quickly.”

Many people believe that since we wipe the washed body with a towel, they do not need to be replaced and washed so often. Nothing could be further from the truth! Every day, not only epidermis and hair accumulate on towels, but also many different microorganisms, which multiply rapidly due to the humidity and heat in the bathroom. Chemist Sylwia Panek wrote on Instagram “in a healthy home” how often it is recommended to change towels for clean ones. On her profile, she discusses topics related to, among others: with eco-cleaning and chemicals around us.

How often should you change towels?

“10 things we don’t think about when cleaning the bathroom – this is the title of one of the chapters in my guide ‘Healthy Home – Cleaning’. Because, you know, many people are so afraid of these terrible bacteria in the toilet that they have to disinfect it, but at the same time “They put a rug on the floor next to it, which they never wash… And they don’t close the toilet seat when draining the water, and then… hmm, it rips off everything around it. Also the toothbrushes standing on the sink and the towels hanging on the hangers,” wrote Sylwia Panek. .

Prof. Philip Tierno, a microbiologist at the Medical University of New York, suggests replacing towels every 3 days and absolutely every time the towel has an unpleasant odor. It is worth remembering that moisture, dead skin and dirt cause bacteria to multiply quickly

– she added.

“Are there any recommendations when it comes to replacing it with new ones?” – one of the people asked. “I haven’t read about such things. But I think that if they are washed well, we should replace them only when they start to fall apart ;)” – replied Sylwia Panek. There were also other comments under the post: “We have a separate toilet, I change the towels once a week. People who have skin problems apparently have to change them every day”, “I have a separate bathroom and toilet, and after washing, we hang the towel on the dryer to dry “And I’m airing the bathroom.”

How often should you change your bedding?

Not just towels. Many people also forget to change bedding regularly and frequently. the chemist recommended doing it at least once a week, or maybe once every two weeks. “I would rather encourage you to do it once a week or at least once every two weeks. But it is also worth considering your lifestyle. I would advise people sleeping with pets to change everything once a week. Be sure to change the bedding after each illness,” she noted.
