Jerzy Hoffman’s “” has been one of the most frequently watched films by Poles over the last 40 years. and it became almost a ritual to watch “Quack” on TV with the simultaneous statement “Your Honor, this is Professor Rafał Wilczur!”. No wonder that when Netflix announced that it wanted to make a new version of the classic, there were fears of an attack on sanctity. And although Hoffman’s “The Quack” was also another film adaptation, in the minds of Poles it functioned as “the only right one”.
Netflix and director Michał Gazda assured that this is not an attack, but an attempt to tell a well-known story in a new way – respecting the previous film adaptation. . As it turns out, not all of them.

Jerzy Hoffman, who had been silent until now, could not hold his tongue when he was asked again about the new film adaptation of Dołęga-Mostowicz’s novel. He sharply criticized the creators of the Netflix hit, saying that little of the book remained in their film:
It was obvious to me that those who wrote the script had not the slightest idea about dramaturgy. Everything that is most important happens outside the frame. Why is an assistant made into a villain? I understand that she is not a miller but a miller. The fiancé is loving in a different way, I also understand. If copyright were still in force today, Dołęga-Mostowicz’s heirs could take the case to court. You can write an original script, but pretend that you are making a film adaptation by completely changing the book… Well, here’s something… Young people don’t understand, but someone had to read it, someone had to direct it to production, someone had to give money. Sorry, today I’m speaking my personal opinion. Maybe I’m not completely right, but I’m sharing my opinion – he concluded at the end of the meeting.
