They removed the Auschwitz Museum’s posts from Facebook. Meta issued a statement

On Friday, 21 posts of the Auschwitz Museum disappeared from Facebook. He blocked the posts and marked them as violating community standards. Meta issued a statement on this matter.

“We mistakenly sent notifications to the Auschwitz Museum informing that several posts published by the museum would be displayed lower in News. In fact, this content does not violate our policies and has never been moved lower in the News tab. We sincerely apologize for this error” – Meta wrote in a statement.

What happened? The Auschwitz Museum’s posts disappeared for four days

On Friday, April 12, the museum posted 21 posts on Facebook with educational information and photos. Some of them also commemorated the victims of German crimes in Poland. Facebook blocked the posts and marked them as violating community standards. They were reinstated on April 16.

The Ministry of Digitization sent Meta, the owner of Facebook, a letter requesting explanations regarding the blocking of content shared on this platform by the Auschwitz Museum. Deputy Minister of Digitization Dariusz Standerski said that the matter must be thoroughly explained by Meta. – What were the detailed reasons for this and where did the algorithm fail, why was there no human supervision? We also ask how many people are currently working on moderating Polish content and how this is done? We are also asking about the procedure for re-verification of content on the portal – explained the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Digitization.

Dariusz Standerski added that the problem with automatic content moderation is systemic and also applies to other social media. – Such scandalous phenomena as hiding information published about World War II and the victims of the Holocaust cannot take place. The matter should not only be resolved in this case, but it should be done systemically. Exactly as we announced a few months ago, if such incidents occur in public space, we will respond on an ongoing basis – said the Deputy Minister of Digitization.

In the past, the Polish Ministry of Digitization also intervened in the matter of Facebook’s policy regarding moderation of content posted on the website. At that time, the aim was, among other things, to block the profile of the Independence March and the Confederation.
