She returned to the stage to conquer the world. She died in tragic circumstances

Regina Pisarek was one of the biggest stars of the Polish stage in the times of the Polish People’s Republic. In the 1970s, the artist performed on the international music scene throughout Eastern Europe. She gave concerts in the USSR, the GDR, Czechoslovakia, Romania and Bulgaria, but the decision to go west caused the authorities at that time to turn against her. So the singer abandoned her musical career to teach. After a few years, she came back – stronger, more determined and ready to conquer the Polish stage again. Then a tragic accident happened.

Pisarek was born on March 25, 1939 in Warsaw. Her passion for music pushed her to participate in a Polish Radio competition organized for amateur singers. The 19-year-old singer took third place then, and two years later she started cooperation with the ZAKR Song Studio. The door to an international career was open to her, and the artist, aware of this, did not intend to give up the opportunity of a lifetime.

Fame, career and difficult choices of Regina Piasarek

In 1963, Pisarek took first place at the National Festival of Polish Song in Opole. She released many famous hits, including “So long were you boys gone”, “It wasn’t worth it” and “Wania lumberjack”. The artist gave concerts in the countries of Eastern Europe: the GDR, the USSR, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria and Romania, but she was also drawn to the West. The singer went to Germany, where she recorded new songs and hosted a radio show.

When she decided to return to Poland after two years, the then authorities openly expressed their reluctance towards her. “I was refused participation in the festival in Opole many times, and the radio does not want to play my songs,” said Regina Pisarek in one of the interviews. Her songs were often omitted from music charts and were not played on the radio, although Pisarek herself released many popular hits. Due to the censorship of one of the songs during the KoĊ‚obrzeg festival, the artist decided to give up her musical career. She left the stage for a few years to pursue her career as a teacher.

The tragic death of Regina Pisarek

In the mid-1990s, Pisarek returned to the stage and her financial situation improved. The artist even found the love of her life – she became involved with a long-time friend with whom, as she emphasized, she wanted to spend her old age. All plans fell apart like a house of cards due to a tragic accident that occurred on January 22, 1998. Regina Pisarek died as a result of a collision behind a drunk driver’s car. Apart from her, one of her family members and three other people also lost their lives. The artist was buried at the Northern Cemetery in Warsaw.
